Hallelujah!!! She got of the nest today on her own and is walking around doing her normal chicken thing!! I gave up on the ice and didn't use it last night but maybe it did help, I don't know. Funny how that works, I post here for help and the next morning it suddenly resolves itself. I am...
I have a broody Orpington, will it pass on its own eventually? I don't have any roosters or fertile eggs (and I don't want anymore chickens atm) She has been broody going on for nearly 4 weeks now, I thought it would pass if I just waited it out. She won't even get off the nest to drink or eat...
I also have a broody Orpington, I don't have any roosters or fertile eggs (and I don't want anymore chickens atm) She has been broody going on for nearly 4 weeks now, I thought it would pass if I just waited it out. She won't even get off the nest to drink or eat, I have to take her off and she...
Hi I'm in the Texas hill country north of San Antonio. I'm from England, hence the name, and we just started with chickens last year. Currently have 6 Buff Orpingtons and 2 Ameraucanas (B/B split) all hens, no roosters atm.
Thank you, that is really helpful I will check them tonight and the coop.
They are supposed to be true Ameraucanas, Paul Smith line, I bought them from a local breeder. Just going by appearances they do appear to conform to standard as far as my untrained eye can tell. They have the cheek...
Sorry I don't have the answers for you, but I was really moved imagining the plight of your poor bullied hen, so I did a little search and came up with this thread from here at the backyard chicken forum that has several ideas of what you could try...
Yes, I think they do change gradually with age, but not this fast I wouldn't have thought.
I was just considering whether mites could be causing the one that has stopped laying, and I am going to do a thorough check for mites tomorrow in the daylight, but then again my buff's are still laying...
I recently acquired two young hens (around 6 weeks ago), I was told they had just started laying. Sure enough they continued to lay after they moved to my place for the first 4/5 weeks or so, One lays very blue eggs, the other has always been blue with slightly more of a greenish tinge. However...
Thank you for the replies. I am really quite pleased to hear that it will continue, it makes it so much easier to handle them and perform health checks, not to mention being able to pet them a little and make them comfortable with being touched by humans.
I'm not going to breed these hens they...
So recently my hens started doing the submissive squat pose when I approach them, and yesterday one laid her first egg, yay! My question is, will they continue to do this through their lives when I approach them (we do not have any roosters), or is it only at early maturity?
Thank you I appreciate the confirmation, at least I won't be wondering if I gave away a hen that I would have liked to keep now.
Edited to add: He just crowed! I saw him do it so I know it was him, now why couldn't he have done that last night and saved us all the bother LOL, thanks anyway.
This is the 'mystery chick' that came with my hatchery order. Hatched on June 27th, so just over 13 weeks old now. Some of the pictures are blurry, sorry, but I included them to help make sure you see the coloring and shape. He/she has some small reddish brown just starting to appear on each...
Urgh I hate scorpions! I moved to Texas from England and have a hard time dealing with all the bugs (we don't have any bugs that can hurt you except wasps in the UK, not even mosquitoes) I am pretty freaked out about the scorpions that I have seen since moving out into the country 2 months ago...
Yes, we live on a couple of acres, but I right now we only move it around the part of the property that is fenced near the house, so it doesn't get to go very far and is easy to move. To be honest I am not really liking it as much as I thought I would as a permanent coop, that is why we are...
