Thanks everyone, the eggs are tasty and I like the hen so all is well. I will say that I am disappointed that the seller may have intentionally mislead me. I specifically put up an ad saying I wanted a blue - not green - egg layer and asked him to send me a pic of one of the hen's eggs so I...
That's what I was afraid of. I don't keep roosters and the guy I bought this hen from got her from a hatchery. He seemed very nice and honest but the color egg he showed me was definitely blue and this egg is a very light green. Oh well, I'll just have to add a blue egg layer in the future ;)
Hello all! I have a cream legbar hen that is about 16 mo old. I bought her from a local almost 2 months ago. Before purchase, I asked to see the color of eggs she laid (I was going out of my way to buy an adult hen that was already laying eggs so I would know I was getting a blue egg layer)...
That was me bitsyhorse, thanks for the link. I actually saw that as well but after reviewing pics and symptoms and such I feel pretty confident that it is not fowl pox. Her bump was scabbed over, but just one large bump where the feathers were still growing out of it and her nostrils and mouth...
Thanks! My hen is doing better as far as the sore healing up. The size has gone down and no longer open or scabbed. I'm keeping an eye on it to make sure the bump goes away. After reading, reading and reading some more online I really haven't seen anything quite like what she had but the...
Yesterday, when I went to check on my "lumpy" hen, I noticed that the "scab" was already pulled back a bit so I took a closer look and saw what I thought was a splinter or something in the middle. Thinking this was the cause of the lump, I pulled the scab back only to discover that what I saw...
Thanks everyone for the suggestions! I think I will try to sterilize a needle and poke to see what comes out. If it's pus filled, are antibiotics warranted? If so, is there a specific (or at least broad spectrum) type for chickens I can pick up from IFA or the likes?
On a happier note, we...
Hello all! I haven't posted in awhile and went outside to take some pics of the girls for updates when I noticed something concerning. Ethel has a large lump on her head between her beak and eye. It is hard, almost crusty or scab like. If I had to guess I would say it seems like an access or...
Thought I would add a pic from this morning of Lucy (Ethel in the background, far too busy eating as usual). Seems they have weathered the rains pretty well so far, I was worried about them when the heavy stuff came down yesterday afternoon and I was away running errands. Project for today is...
Thanks! I did see this one on KSL and it looks very nice, just not exactly what I'm looking for. I found a few other potential ones in the classified but have also started looking into local custom builders. Anyone ever hear of or purchase from hutchesandcoops.com in Kaysville?
Thanks for the welcome everyone! So good to see how active this thread is. We got some rain here in Provo but the girls seemed to have stayed fairly dry. It did show me where I need to work on the roof of our A frame coop, there is a bit of leaking going on. We bought it used from a lady in...
Hello! I am new to the site and new to backyard chickens as well! I live in Provo and just acquired 2 young barred rock hens last week and have been enjoying learning everything I can about their care. So far the girls seem to be settling into their new surroundings and my kids have loved...
