Wow roadrunner, a wealth of info and all good stuff! Thanks to everyone for the responses and suggestions. I've done some waterfowl hunting so have the old bird stew figured out haha.
Good answers, all makes sense and all go to the freezer.
In short, despite the breed is there a feeding regime...
I'll need to look into them, thanks. Breeds are a bit limited out here, at this time I am considering lohman Browns and/ or ISA Browns as there is a good local supply. Eggs and friendliness ( have a year old son) are the main priority right now.
Not specifically fat content but more meat / body mass.... Was just thinking if I could get them off or slowed down on egg production then more energy would go into meat.
What age do roosters start to get noisy? No roosters allowed where I am at so kkeping one around won't work, but if they...
Is there a process to fatten up a layer, or get them to go off the lay in preparation for the table?
I don't have chickens yet but will be getting some in about a month for the first time (dual purpose type). I would like to butcher two or three so was thinking of just getting a few extra off...
loudnerd, let me know how the feathers go...I am a flytier as well and am always interested in additional material. I've read that you need to be cautious of bugs and should freeze or microwave before adding feathers to the collection.
Does anyone know where to order these that ships to Canada? No luck with eBay or Amazon yet... Looking for 5 to 15 of the horizontal nipples. Located in Kamloops bc. Thanks!
I hear you, but would rather be directly against the slope to try and gain some geothermal effect ( cooler in the summer and warmer in the winter), though the risk of excess moisture is worrisome...I have a bunch of 3x4 landscape ties that I'll likely use.
Other than the obvious structural and...
Thanks again Aart.
Thanks for your comments CA- the slope has been like that for about 8 years ( I moved in 2 years ago) so hoping that it is no longer active. I will do some thinking and additional support for that side.
Most of the grass cover is bluebunch wheatgrass so fairly deep...
Thanks aart, yea water is a concern. We are fairly dry here so I should be able to manage that with proper grading outside the coop. Likely treated plywood and maybe vapor barrier where we have soil contact. If needed I could add some paving stones above to Manage drainage. 4 birds would be the...
Oh great 4 posts already and they are all by me. Sorry, trying to keep it organized. Just to clarify my questions a bit-
1: will chickens effectively use a coop with a entry at the top, and the interior extending down?
2: is a 35 - 45 degree ramp extending down 6 vertical feet reasonable? And...
And here Are the very rough plans which will likely be hard to interpret. in order, front view ( opposite slope) top view, and side view. Draw sort of to a 3 x 6' footprint scale. Planned to have a wrap around ramp on 3 sides. Roost on one long side and one short side. Fire away with questions...
