I’ve Never Had A “Normal” Animal

Ugh, I have 7 - 16 week olds that still sleep in a pile. In all my years I’ve never had a group as darn stubborn as this group. I have roosts all over the run that go up as high as 6’ and the jerks are balking at 16” for the first roost in the coop. I have sand on the floor so they poop and...

all cockerels found their new flocks! ☺️

    In Southern New England

I’m in Vermont, where are you located? I insulate, have good venting and use sweeter heaters over one of my roost bars. The birds can decide if they want the heat or not as there is another roost bar they can use without heat. It was -25 or so here. Anytime it was below 20 the birds snuggled...

Welsummer & Polish Cockerels central VT

I have 3 roosters. A Welsummer, 13 weeks, he had an incubator injury, and lost the tips of his toes because the other chicks got to him before I removed them, so he has no nails. Doesn’t seem to bother him one bit. Another Welsummer that’s 8 weeks, and a 12 Week old gold laced polish that was...

    Can turkeys live in town?

My chickens are by far so much louder than the Turkey. Some days I’m embarrassed at what the neighbors think 😳

    Can turkeys live in town?

I have an in town turkey. I live on an acre. She’s from the farm up the road and decided she’d rather live here after many attempts of trying to bring her back unsuccessfully. My Neighbors love her. She gets visitors and her old family checks in on her. She stays on my property for the most...

Ohio Revised Code and Ranging Chickens

Honest question, If you don’t have chickens why are you in a backyard chicken forum? If you’re here to just complain about chickens, I’m going to offer up you won’t have much support about your plight here. I also know the situation can be very different from the outside looking in. Not...

Ohio Revised Code and Ranging Chickens

I use a portable poultry fence. Mine is 60” and I can move it around, and electrify if I want to. It’s 95’ long and I just purchased another so they have a larger area. I had to not because my girls were getting to far away, but because I have neighbors that have dogs that can get out.

    Training "stubborn" hens

I don’t say anything anymore. They hear the sound of my door opening and they come from everywhere. Even the Turkey. She has a tendency to wander. So if we don’t see her we just open and close the door and she velociraptors herself right back to the yard.

    Training "stubborn" hens

You’re being generous if you think they take turns……likely one of the brain cell holders lost it when it was their turn.

    Training "stubborn" hens

I bought 3 EE chicks on a whim last year to add to the flock. No braincells whatsoever. They would run right past the WIDE OPEN run door freaking because there is food and they’re missing out while the other girls are happily eating. They’re better this year. But can still have their oblivious...

    Training "stubborn" hens

Well youre lucky. Rodents, attracting other wildlife, bears, raccoons, skunk possum etc. are a real problem for the majority of chicken owners. So I absolutely err on the side of caution. When you start to notice the problem it is usually to late. Goodness gracious just read all the posts on...

    Training "stubborn" hens

If they’re out free ranging they rarely go into the coop to eat food. And they also don’t eat or drink at night so I don’t understand why they need food 24/7

    Training "stubborn" hens

I feed 2x per day, and use a call for food. They get fed in the morning. Enough that they run out. Then they get fed again about 2 hours before dark so they’re back in and I can enjoy the evening without stress of getting them in. They often don’t finish “dinner” but they’re excited to get it...

Turkey left home and joined my flock.

She’s almost 6 years old. I'm confident it’s a hen lol. I’ll look into the others. I just don’t know if I have the space. I didn’t expect to have a turkey adopt me this year and I added onto the flock.
