When to Return a Bird Outdoors in Winter after Injury/Sickness

Thanks for the reply and that's all solid advice! Fortunately for me I have a pretty calm flock, they don't really bully unfamiliar birds. I think my flock is too calm, I've seen a juvenile hawk land and free range with them. Luckily nobody got hurt.

When to Return a Bird Outdoors in Winter after Injury/Sickness

Hey folks! I've had chickens for 10 years and one thing I always have a hard time with is knowing if it's safe to return a bird outside in cold weather after being injured or falling ill and was nursed back to good health. Normally if a bird gets injured in the Winter, I bring them indoors so...

    Bantam Chick Hatching Issues

I got her all the way out of the egg about an hour ago. There were no blood vessels attached to her and she had full absorbed her yolk sack, so she was basically just sitting in the egg exhausted and stuck because it was too dry. Do you have any idea what may have caused so much of the shell to...

    Bantam Chick Hatching Issues

I've moistened it up and have her head exposed now. She's breathing and I can feel her moving her feet. She hasn't been chirping much since the video was taken.

Alright, video should be working now. Sorry about that.

    Bantam Chick Hatching Issues

Alright, the chick is still breathing but the membrane is starting to tan around areas the chick has made slits. It's past 24 hours, possibly more, of trying to hatch. Should I step in and try to assist the hatch at this point?

    Bantam Chick Hatching Issues

She's chirping more inside the egg, there's a slight slit in the membrane now. I'm not sure if it was caused by her or the broody hen. The membrane seems to be pretty dry but hasn't started tanning yellow/beige or anything like that. I just wanted some advice on this hatch since I've never...

    Bantam Chick Hatching Issues

This egg has been hatching since around 4pm yesterday (5/12/19,) possibly longer. It's being hatched by a broody hen. I've done a few hatches and never seen the chicks damage this much of the shell during hatching, and I see small amounts of blood on the membrane. I had another chick from this...

Crossing Millie Fluer and Porcelain d'Uccles

Anyone have good resources available on what to expect when crossing different breeds of d'Uccles? Right now I've got a Millie Fluer/Porcelain cross being hatched and wanted to read more on the genetics of the breed.

    Permethrine Resistant Pests

No problem and will do. I'll double check the dosing on the pamphlet!

    Permethrine Resistant Pests

I used Gordon's Permethrine 10 from TSC and I followed the directions for the dosing. I don't remember the exact dosage though. I think it was 2 oz per gallon of water when spraying for an area with mites. When I sprayed I got everything in the coop as thoroughly coated as possible. Not...

    Permethrine Resistant Pests

Yes, I am treating because the mites are actively present and I wanted to make sure that going forward I'm not building up resistances in these pests that will make it harder to deal with in the future. Sounds like the next step is to try and suffocate these SLM's. If I don't get good results...

    Permethrine Resistant Pests

I've got some issues with scaly leg mites and possibly red chicken mites. It's been a very wet summer so far and fleas are also on the rise. I haven't yet tried beneficial nematodes but that will definitely be my next step.

    Permethrine Resistant Pests

I've been looking into the use of Permethrine and have seen that pests can become resistant to Permethrine if used over a long period of time. What should you do to alternate treatments to prevent pests from becoming resistant to Permethrine? I've dusted my coop with DE before in the past and it...
