That is called the Mpemba effect and it only occurs under certain conditions. It likely will not happen inside a chicken coop where there is no wind to help evaporate the hot water, therefore reducing the amount of water having to freeze compared to cold water. Not to mention, it also said...
Mine have yet to use the nesting boxes I built for them. They prefer the floor in the pine shavings. I've tried buckets, and several other items to their dislike.
You must be in California. Lol
Do a search. There's got to be somebody in California that sells used coffee grounds, or somebody that can ship wherever you are.
Used coffee grounds aren't that expensive. you use it in conjunction with sand. It keeps your coop from smelling if you happen to have that problem, or if you don't want that problem. recycled coffee grounds
I thought I had a finished image in here. The run is covered. It also faces NNW, and the morning and afternoon sun is shaded by trees. It is the late afternoon sun that enters those windows, making the coop hot.
I put a shade cloth (vertically) on the run hardware cloth to block the sun from...
Just purchased this sun shade cloth from Lowes (https://low.es/4elzigf) to place on the run that allows the sun into those three windows at the front of the coop.
Going to look into placing some type of awening on the window on that end. Those should help a lot.
Great ideas!
Thanks.
I tried to get a ridge vent installed when it was built, but they wouldn't do it. I did install eave vents so taht air flows up from the eaves to the top allowing air to flow outward throught the gable vents as it is intended to work. I fdo have a powered fan at one end of the gable that stays...
The direct sunlight begins to hit about 2:30-3:00. The run isn't the problem, though we are adding a shade to the side of the run. We hope it will block more sun from entering the windows in the late afternoon, even though we keep the curtains closed to prevent that.
As mentioned, you can't see...
It's shaded until until about 2:30-3:00 and then it gets the late afternoon sun. It's on the property line, so can't plant trees.
Makes since about the AC unit and the dust. Thanks for that info.
We purchased our prefab back in Jan/Feb timeframe and built it out into a coop. Some pics attached.Ours is also a 8'x12'. We made a 4' feed room so we could keep the feed locked up within the coop, leaving 8'x8' for the chickens. I added three roosting bars and two shit shelves with sand &...
Good morning, chicken family.
I've read through many posts about managing heat and improving coop ventilation, but I haven’t found an answer to my specific situation.
We converted a prefab shed into a coop. It’s 8'x12' with a 4' feed room, leaving an 8'x8' space for the chickens. The ceiling...
Good evening.
We have some 5 week old birds and are unsure of the breeds. Bought them at TSC, a pair of each type (RIR, Barred Rock, Rustic Rock, and Black sex-link), but what's throwing us is that Google shows us the same image for a Rustic Rock and Barred Rock. What breed is the silver...
