A bit late to this discussion, but I've had my ducks tear off their nails and found the following worked great for me: epsom salt bath to clean the wounded area + manuka honey silver spray + liquid bandage.
Silver spray kept away infection and promoted healing, while liquid bandage protected it...
I haven't had any health issues with him other than a limp way back, like a year or more ago, that he no longer has. He's otherwise a completely healthy duck with silky smooth, well-oiled feathers (just weird coloration). His eyes are bright and clear, and his bill and feet are well moisturized...
I have a drake that constantly has me questioning ducks as a whole, but he seems to be an outlier among my flock, so maybe he is just an oddball, but I'd love some thoughts.
Today's mystery, his molting patterns.
The first year I had him from a duckling 2024 to 2025, he molted as one would...
Oh whoops should have mentioned that. They are mallards. No crests in the family or bloodline, so no vulnerabilities. As far as I can tell, he is a completely healthy drake. Just an odd fellow that doesn't get along well with others.
I previously thought others bullied him first, but he often...
This is probably going to be an odd post but it's not specifically an emergency or anything, just a curiosity I wanted to share and maybe get some thoughts on it.
Anyways I have one duck in my flock who I've been observing who has displayed a number of strange behaviors ever since he was...
Dang horn-dogs! Luckily, it all worked out in the end after this breeding season. I was able to get him away from the hen of his fixation, and she hatched out her brood just fine. But I am definitely planning ahead for the next breeding season, so I won't have a repeat of the issue.
Oh really? I don't think I ever caught that! I'd love to add them if you had any examples of this! Does this occur during a specific age or duration of their juvenile molt?
Mallard Drakes Vs. Hens:
Determining Mallard-Colored Ducks' Sex Prior To The First Nuptial Molt
I wanted to compile a comprehensive, all-in-one essay post about what I've researched for determining the sex of mallards or mallard-colored duck breeds for future reference.
Additional info...
Welcome to duck parenthood!
It's possible they were dumped ducks, especially if they are drakes. To tell, listen to their voices. If it's voice is low and raspy, more like a grumble, that's a drake. If it's loud like an actual "quack" it is a hen. And IF either are drakes they should not be...
Just sharing an updated observations of Geronimo this year! Going on about 1.5 years in age he's nearly through his next nuptial molt, but I've noticed something strange about him compared to my other mallard drake and even their sons. Geronimo, being the oldest, was the first of the flock to...
I'm currently working on pulling together a comprehensive first aid kit to have at the ready should any of my ducks need it! But first, I wanted to share this embroidered patch I made for my kit! It's going to be ironed-on to a small backpack I got for this project. I adore how it turned out...
