    Easter Egger club!

My boyfriend just has a very bizarre sense of humor. He refers to all food as either nachos, or fish sandwich. So he doesn't say he wants lunch, or a snack, or whatever, he says he wants fish sandwich. It's been a running joke for years. So when I named my chick Tater Tot, he named his Fish...

    Easter Egger club!

I have a good update on the saga of the egg-eating flock! I started them on oyster shell a few days after I caught them eating the Speckled Sussex's soft egg. She laid another soft egg in front of me about two days after that. Since then, I have found four small but very hard shelled eggs in...

    Easter Egger club!

Speak of the devil... I was taking a nap a few hours ago while the chickens wandered around the yard, when a chicken started yelling so loudly I could hear it in the bedroom, which is really well insulated. I jumped out of bed and ran outside, expecting to find a hawk attacking my girls or...

    Easter Egger club!

Layena plus omega-3. They also get random kitchen scraps, a handful of peanuts every day as a treat, and they free range for a few hours on most days. The Sussex is obsessed with eating ants, the rest are more interested in grass and weeds.

    Easter Egger club!

I didn't even realize that they were laying until my Speckled Sussex laid one right in front of me last week, then turned around and chowed down on it while the others ran in to join her. I think they (or at least she) has been laying, but I didn't realize it because I didn't recognize the egg...

    Easter Egger club!

Here's my Easter Egger, Fish Sandwich. I don't know what color eggs she will lay, or if she has already. Alas, my girls are all egg eaters, so it's kind of hard to tell who is laying and who isn't, or who the bits of egg that I find came from. :( I'm working on plans for a roll-away nesting...

    Watery pooped snotgoblin

Thanks! I live in north Georgia, so it's been humid and hot with lots of rain. My other three (Australorp, Speckled Sussex, and Easter Egger) haven't had any such problems. There aren't any nutritional deficiencies that would present this way, are there? The Sussex is the only one laying (as...

post your chicken coop pictures here!

The bottom part of the run is hardware cloth, it's the just top that is made of chicken wire. The yard is fenced in, and those shrubs are just in front of the fence between my yard and the neighbors'. We're not in the woods, we're actually in a subdivision. There is wire fencing buried under...

post your chicken coop pictures here!

Sure, I'll show off. :) This was built by my very patient and talented boyfriend. The coop is just a Suncast plastic storage box with holes cut out for vents and a pop door. This spring, the day after we decided it was complete enough to put the chicks out into. The ramp and perches weren't...

    Watery pooped snotgoblin

I have a 5-month-old buff orpington (well, that's what the hatchery called her. She sure doesn't look like one, but anyway...) who, since she was a 3 day old chick, has always had watery, smelly stool and sneezes up gobs of mucus. She eats well, has grown well, is boisterous and active, and...

Chicken Names- whats your chickens name?

Thanks! I can only take credit for Tater Tot, though. My son named Alduin and Lemongrab, and my boyfriend named Fish Sandwich.

Chicken Names- whats your chickens name?

From left to right: The Black Australorp is Alduin the World Eater, the Easter Egger is Fish Sandwich, the Buff Orpington is Tater Tot, and the Speckled Sussex is Lemongrab.

    Problem with Nutrena Chicken Feed

I don't know how helpful this is, but while I've never used Southern States myself, a friend of mine who has had chickens his whole life (he's in his 70's, so that's a lot of chickens!) was just telling me a few days ago that he feeds a high protein feed by Southern States and he swears by it.

    Cleaning Routine Brooder and Beyond

I have four two week olds in a 50 gallon tote. I put down three layers of new paper towels every morning. At night before bed, I pull out the top layer, in the morning I change the rest. I also wash out the waterer every morning, but they're on tetracycline so I have to mix up a new batch...
