PLEASE HELP!
I have this terrible little hutch set-up for my hens. I have 3 hens. Picture of hutch is attached.
Every morning, I go out to the hutch and let out my babies (they free-range all day, every day). I quickly pick out any poop from the pine shavings i use in their house and...
Can't use sweet pdz because I can't get it here in Ontario. I am using play sand and DE, as that's what I have to work with for now. I was looking for a Canadian alternative to sweet PDZ but so far, everyone at every farm-related store has just looked at me sideways!
I know in the case of my chickens, it's not lack of forage, they free range several hours a day. It's also not diet based, they are on an amish feed that is non GMO, for egg laying hens and also are supplemented with oyster shells and grit and lots and lots of treats including: blueberries...
thanks for the info! I should clarify, the pullets are new (I have only had them a few days) and they are just coming into their egg laying. They are not laying soft shells, rather just thin ones. Thin enough to easily peck into but not soft. I haven't had enough eggs from them yet to know if...

Two of my three hens are pullets and have just begun laying. Their shells are still quite thin. I have them on a good feed, with oyster shells and grit. I know it will only be a matter of time before they start producing hard-shelled eggs. In the meantime...today, one of my pullets...
For now, I am keeping their poop pans filled with shavings but I have put sand and DE in their run. I will likely scoop the run once a week, as it is difficult to access (its under the coop). But I free-range them so much of the day, there isn't much mess there. I looked for PDZ but that...
I just got two new chickens today. I noticed when I got them home that one has a beak that's short on top and longer on the bottom. At first, I wondered if her beak had been clipped and then, in trying to find out info, I found out about cross beak....I am wondering if anyone can tell me how to...
So I have the two new chickens and she is definitely being a boss but she's not being terrible. Just chasing them away from treats. certain areas, etc. Nothing outright violent yet. So I feel relieved!
I hope you get to have them! They're definitely and adventure, so far anyway. Some days end in tears and others I am laughing. But learning as I go. It's worth it so far. But lots to figure out.
