    what breed of turkey

We LOVE our Bourbon Reds! Very friendly birds, even the tom is fairly relaxed. As soon as they hear my husband calling the run to the front pasture and gobble and cluck away. They're excellent foragers (we also have free-choice feed in the barn) and good mothers. Though I will say, they take a...

    Major Mite Infesation

Oh, no! We use DE as more than a preventative, it always kills all of our mites. The first time we saw mites were when most of our hens with the BADLY ruffled, scaled legs and were acting strangely. I was panicked and all set to use oil, but we instead tried DE. Like within a few days all the...

Does anybody know how to make/help a chicken go broody and sit on eggs

I agree. There's no way to make them broody, but have a brood house/pen ready for when they do, and then buy your eggs. It'll happen!!!

Dirt Floor or raised wood floor in chicken coop???

Where we live, right at the bottom of a hill with exceptional gravel veins (agh!) except for one month out of the year, we have pretty wet or flooded ground, so we have a raised wood floor. The water runs right under the house during our heavy rains. We've had flooding for a few days in a row a...

Here are most of my coops.

Looks great! I love the feeder! I think I'll swipe that for our CR summer tractor! Thanks! I noticed that you have the same problem as us with the bedding getting into the waterers. We got a plastic crate that lifted it a few inches above the bedding, (we layer our bedding pretty deep) so the...

    frozen chicken

Glad your feathered friend's doing better! I don't know how often you had to bring a chicken in during the winter, so just wanted to remind you to weather it like you do seedlings. My first year, I made the mistake of taking a few completely mended ducks and chickens back out, and they died...

    very sick girl please help

Oh no! Poor thing! It sounds almost like she is egg bound... does the discharge look like the white of an egg? Watch for egg shell pieces and a yolk looking discharge. If it is and if she is acting seemingly alright, then the egg may have broke, alleviating the pain. But you'd have to watch her...

How long is too long to wait to eat a rooster?

dancingbear, We butchered and ate the little freeloaders. We did the brine, and it is SOOOO good. Dare I say, better than young. There's more flavor! Thanks! K Moore

    Jumping at each other

Our turkey are at that stage right now! It's really funny to see the little jakes try to fan out to impress the hens! They only have these short little stubby tail feathers. Our roosters are even trying to fight the jakes, not successfully, though. And the attempts at crowing?!Crack me up!

    Secret Society?

BYC reminds me of when I was a kid and my cousin and sister and I had our own secret club! We each had a code name, and we wrote down significant facts about our group, ie what radio station we listened to, and our favorite foods. You know, the important stuff... We also wrote and signed a vow...

Puma in my area~ west Tennessee

I remember a few years ago there was a big to-do in the west about mountian lions. The government was fining farmers, residents and so on for protecting themselves against these predators. It got so bad that there was a family that lost a child to one. Now I'm not sure what happened after...

So my hen has gone broody sorta..

We had a little black hen that did that. I got sick of the mental anguish of, should I leave the eggs, or will they rot, and then will others lay their eggs in with those, and what will I sell then?! I ordered some fake eggs. Works wonders!
