WOW! A great catch!!! I was shocked when I saw the headline too. I never saw Henny Penny fly when she was in my yard because she would just wait at my front door until I fed her. Maybe she's a Long Island Chick and not a Jersey Girl!
Ginny, as I might have mentioned in my email to you...

You're all welcome. Helping Henny Penny was not a difficult decision - we have a bunch of pets so putting her in the right hands (Lunachick) seemed like the natural thing to do. As luck would have it, I had extra dog and puppy crates for her care and shipping.
If I ever get some...

LUNA - Thats wonderful news.
I am so happy for her and you.
This has been the best story I am so proud of that young woman to take time out to help that poor bird.
I am not surprised about all the help from this board. What a great group of people. I am just glad...

She's in a plastic "puppy crate" - much stronger than the cardboard variety with a towel and cuts of cantaloupe for food and hydration. I'm pretty sure she'll do well on the trip. She'll arrive tomorrow by 12 noon so it'll be less than 24 hours (total) before she reaches Lunachick. 3...
Success!!!! Henny Penny is currently on her way to the Jersey Shore to live her life with Lunachick via Express Mail. She'll be there tomorrow before 12 Noon so it's up to Lunachick to give us an update. Many thanks to everyone for their advice - I really couldn't have rescued this bird...

PurpleChicken, Tiffanyh and Lunachick,
First, let me apologize if I've confused anyone's "handle".
The 3 of you have expressed interest in Henny Penny and I'm happy that you're all there to provide her a home. I have 5 dogs and definitely cannot keep her. If someone wants to come...

As per your suggestion, I lured her into a dog crate with food and pulled a string to close the door once she ate comfortably and had both feet inside. She wasn't that flustered but concerned when she realized that she had no way out. I've fed her and put old towels on the bottom of...
Flufnstuffs~FluffySilkies :
Make sure you give her a dish of water that can not be tiped over and spilled.
That type of cage will not hold wood shaving as bedding...
Can you put that cage in a garage or basement at night???
A coon could reach in that cage and kill her at night.
We have had...
Flufnstuffs~FluffySilkies :
THATS WONDERFUL
If you are only going to have her for a short time then the frozen peas/corn are good to feed her. Also some oatmeal
"dryed old fashioned OAT FLAKES"
fOR BEDDING YOU CAN USE WHAT EVER YOU HAVE.
Wood chips an old rag towel.
In this case it is to bad...

Success!!!! I caught Henny Penny this morning using your method. She's been pretty calm. What should I put in the crate while I figure out her home situation? I'm going to call her previous owners but I don't think they're set up for chickens anymore. I'll post another picture in a...
