How funny! I can imagine that watching that would be quite the experience. Hatching fertile eggs under a Broody will be our next "adventure." Thank you for your help and info!
No, we have chicks already. : ) Question though, if we were to put eggs under her, how would she protect her chicks? We would obviously need a place to seperate her and the babies from the others. But I have always wondered how Mama hens protect her chicks from getting pecked on by the others.
She has been
She has been in the cage for at least 2.5 weeks. I only let her out every few days to go and dust bathe....only after I shut up the coop so she cannot go back in. And she is only out for a few minutes at a time.
One thing we have learned with our ducks, is definitely giving them Brewers yeast daily ( for the niacin ducks need ), and vitamins in their waters every few days. And lots of herbs and fresh greens. It helps keep them from getting sick or having a vitamin deficiency. At least your sick duck...
Hmmm... I have found that trying to figure out exactly what is wrong or what went wrong with a sick bird is difficult. If you don't feel or see an egg, I would say something else went wrong with your duck. I haven't had much experience with sick adult ducks, mostly ducklings, but I wish I knew...
I would suggest you either get a few more ducks around the same age as yours now, or rehome. After being with other ducks, your lone one is sure to be scared and lonely! If you want to get a few others to integrate with her, I would check Craigslist or even your local feed store. I wouldn't...
Have you given her vitamin B? We had 2 ducklings that were very sick from being in a feed store too long. We gave them vitamin B shots and they perked up. You can buy a vitamin B12 from the store and crush up a tablet in their water, or go to a vet store and buy the shot. We got our vitamin B...
I have had a broody lavender bantam hen. She has been broody for at least 3 weeks! We have her in a wire bottomed cage made specifically for breaking broodies. But this isn't working. I have cooled her off in water, kept her in the cage almost always.....not sure what else to do. When I let her...
Who do you think laid it? I know chickens lay fart eggs, but we have never had our ducks lay an egg as tiny as that. Even when our adults first started laying, they laid large ones.
Well, I have only gotten the small one so far. One of the adult Pekins is laying on the best right now. Since we started integrating the ducklings with the adults 2 weeks ago, the laying of the adults has been up and down. They have decided to lay later than normal, and only lay about 2 eggs a...
Hello all! I woke up this morning to let my 6 ducks out. 3 of the ducks are still ducklings at 8 and 7 weeks. The other 3 are adult pekins. Well, underneath the baby ducklings was this tiny egg! I don't think my adult birds laid it...could one of the ducklings have laid it?
Here in Colorado, I have been getting 5 to 6 dollars a dozen at our farmers market. People pay more for them becuase the majority of poultry owners raise chickens- not as many raise ducks. So a duck egg is a bit of a specialty! Check online on New York's Cottage Foods Act. Here in CO, I can sell...
