    Keeping emus with other livestock?

I tried to keep my 3 emus with my chickens, ducks, and pigs but it didn't work out. The male pig was trying to mount the emus when the female was locked away with piglets. The ducks, especially the small call ducks really annoyed the emus. The emus got stressed out and pulled their feathers out...

Emu pulling their own feathers out

In case someone else has the same problem: changing the bird's diet to ratite feed did not make a difference but moving them out to their own space of similar size but without any other birds had an instant effect. Within a week they stopped pulling their feathers out, calmed down, and are much...

Emu pulling their own feathers out

They are in an open space about 100' x 40' with chickens, ducks, and pigs. They eat chicken feed until 2 weeks ago but I now switched them to ratite feed which took some engineering to get them to only eat that and the chickens only their feed.

Emu pulling their own feathers out

I have three 4 months old emus. About a month ago they started pulling their own back feathers out. At first I could not figure out what is going on, but it is pretty clear now. They all have the exact same pattern on the back where the feathers are missing. Is this a sign of stress or problem...

    dead chicken/lonely chicken

Try to find birds that match the age of your lonely hen. Chickens are social and need company. Last year I had one wounded chick and it was a hard decision between isolation (and less chance of being hurt by others) or keeping it with some company. I ended up putting it with 2 other chicks for...

    Rice Hulls Bedding is Magic

Quote: I get all my supplies from Mountain Feed & Farm Supply in Ben Lomond in the Santa Cruz Mountains, but I have found rice hulls in most feed stores in this area. The all see rice halls from Mallard Creek: http://www.mallardcreekinc.com/shavings.html

    Rice Hulls Bedding is Magic

I wouldn't use it in a high traffic area or space that cannot contain them without spilling over.

    Rice Hulls Bedding is Magic

I haven't seen rice hulls mentioned much so I've decided to draw people's attention to it as a great material for bedding. I have been using it for over a year for both chickens and ducks with great success. It is amazing how much better results I get with the ducks over pine shavings. The main...

    Raccoon Attack

It's a little insane to kill all the wildlife in your area just so you can have a few eggs. There are ways to avoid predators (automatic doors, letting birds out after predator activity is over, electric fencing), and there are ways to trap and relocate predators. Most Raccoons are perfectly...

The Duck-ponics Experiment - Raising minnows

I have a 700 gallon pond with 10 ducks and after a few broken pumps, switched to Laguna Max Flo and so far (after 2 months) having great success with it. It clogs from feathers after about a month and needs to be cleaned (which is simple and takes a few minutes). I highly recommend it for duck...
