Hi! I'm so sorry to hear that! I would suggest looking for breeders out that way. One might be Sweet Southern Silkies, and you can look her up on FB. I breed silkies, but I don't ship anything other than eggs. My primary service is my DNA Testing Lab :)
Thank you for this! I do indeed now have the Blue Egg gene tests available and you can find that here: https://thesilkielab.com/product/blue-egg-gene/
The test can tell between one or two copies of the gene! We also offer a Recessive White and a the Lavender Test :) All three will tell you if...
He is very cute! Colorwise, he looks like a dark blue. He is pet quality, and 99% sure that's a male :) However, that's why I started my business; it can be very tricky to tell about the actual colors and the sex!
It does not mean that they are mutts/mixes :) The gene that causes the extra toes in silkies presents in many ways, and when breeding silkies you will always end up with some that don't have the right amount of toes or spacing. Regarding the color, paint is known to have pigment issues at hatch...
Hi! Apologies for my delay here, I wasn't notified of more responses on my thread. I think your project sounds very exciting! Visually, there is no way to tell if they carry 1 copy of the Silkie gene or not. I will be developing a test for this, and will hopefully be releasing it within the next...
Hi!! I do :) That's a very tricky thing to figure out! One method is to look at the down feathers and if they are blue underneath, that is going to be dark blue and not black. However, some blacks look a bit like that as a chicks, so you'd need to wait until they are older and it's not always...
Thank you very much! Yes! There are a few who do DNA Sex Testing, but only one other place that does pheno/genotype testing! I plan to hopefully be able to be pretty active in this community :)
Love it!! Same with me when it comes to breeding :) Some colors are much harder to tell and take a lot longer to develop, like Lavenders for example. And those ones aren't necessarily harder, but because of their genetics, they develop slower, are more prone to health problems, and you need to...
Hi!
You can have some genetic testing done :) Usually people buy their birds based on the genes they want/desire, but there is a lot that can't be easily validated just by looking. Most people only test for genetics if they aren't sure if the bird they have actually carries the trait they want...
Hi!
My name is Danielle and I am a Silkie Breeder and I own The Silkie Lab.
I'm in Michigan, and I created my own little business for DNA Testing Chickens, Geese, etc. I am only a few years into breeding silkies, so I wouldn't consider myself a full-blown breeder yet, but I'm working on...
