    Starting up again!

Awesome! I too just restarted although was only absent chickens over the winter. They’re around 4/5 weeks old and growing fast!

    Bow Legged Chick

I have one chick which hasn’t grown at the same rate as the others. Her legs are bowed. Her feet stay one on the other while standing and she walks that way kind of limping along. Thoughts???

    Heat Down South

It snowed 5” in northern Illinois on Sunday, ugh. Push the warm weather north asap please!

    When to move chicks outside

My chicks are in the coop now and have been from day one. We're starting over, so no full grown hens walking around which makes things easier. I did put the heat lamp in the coop, but they have full reign of the coop which is 8' x 4'. We're 3 weeks in with no issues and it snowed 5" here last...

    Illinois...

No roosters - live in a small town, but still a town. :-) I actually gave away the two roosters I had to a friend in the country. I do have plans, although they're not totally accurate as I drew them myself and modified them a bit during construction. I'm planning to take a bunch more pics...

    Illinois...

Coop looks great @megpie021. I just finished mine - all except the paint. Planning on all white or gray with white trim. The chickens love it. And - as with most things - it cost more and took longer than planned, lol.

Finished Coop Picture - Still Needs Bottom Perimeter

All, Finished up my coop / run a couple days ago and the chickens are loving the run (have either been in brooder or coop since birth). I attached a pic - still needing to paint, thinking of going all white or gray with white trim. I also need to finish the bottom perimeter. Planning to...

    Anchoring My Coop

Planning to anchor it this weekend! I survived last night's winds without incident!

Do I Need To Move The Heat Lamp Too

I never did hang the lamp and everyone is doing great, including my mom. I told her my "chicken friends" say I'm good to go. I checked on my chickens each night, they were always resting in a clump next to each other. They did the exact same in the brooder each night too. Every morning they...

    Anchoring My Coop

I just finished my coop last weekend (will post pics and such at a later date). We're suppose to get some healthy wind gusts over the next couple of days and figured I better anchor it - if it ever tipped over, I'd never get it back up without some major complications - weighs a ton. I was...

Do I Need To Move The Heat Lamp Too

I went a bit overboard on the coop, so it's definitely quality. It's about 6 foot tall (for someone standing inside anyways) and all the ventilation is up high. They haven't ventured up to the roost yet, so down on the floor there are zero drafts. I actually had my mind made up on not needing a...

Do I Need To Move The Heat Lamp Too

Finally finished the coop, yahoo! I moved the chickens out and they've now spent 2 nights out there - with no heat lamp - lows have hovered around 42 to 45. The majority of the chickens are 7 weeks with some at 5 weeks too. There's a stretch of 3 nights coming up with lows around 31 to 33 -...

    Building a run first timer

Basic answer is chicken wire keeps chickens in but doesn't keep predators out. It's pretty flimsy and a determined racoon will easily get through. Hardware cloth is a welded wire and much more rigid - will keep raccoons, etc. out if installed properly. I know it's kind of silly we have the word...

    What killed Bubbles?

Hard to say - there are some prints that definitely look like fox / mink (paw prints) and others that look like raccoon (v shaped ends). See this pic - maybe it will help. Foxes would typically take the chicken away whereas raccoons would eat nearby - but those paw prints are throwing me off...

    Any Roos ???

Thx all. I sure thought it was a boy - so much different than the others. Guess we know who's moving out soon - we have a great home waiting... I'll post individual pics of any suspicious ones this weekend.
