    Plymouth Barred Rocks - Canada?

I would like to find a good source for eggs in Canada, other than hatchery birds. They seem to be such a beautiful dual purpose bird. Maybe we need to make a list of Canadian breeders?

Post Pics Of Orps/ Orpingtons HERE

I've been using old horse blankets draped over a large dog crate, with a bit of hay inside. When it got cold here, my rooster climbed in there & wouldn't come out He was sitting on the one and only egg. I had to rescue it from under him. He was very nice and warm.

    Laying behavior

I set up the video to snoop on my hen laying breakfast She spent a considerable amount of this time throwing hay on her back. Anyone know what might be motivating this, or if it is normal. I'm a fairly new chicken owner. She was also very quiet during the laying process. I expected a bunch of...

Starting my first mixed breed, heritage, self-sustaining chicken flock

The weather should be relatively mild on Vancouver Island. There are breeders of Marans on the mainland. You might check out this organization http://fvpfa.org/ for some contacts. I would start with chicks. My initial hatch was not that great (temp fluctuations, exploding eggs, found out...

Britrock, those birds look Big, with beautiful markings. Do they have a nice disposition to go with all the other lovely attributes?

Going to show off my ignorance!

my barred rock is a delightful little hen that keeps my crippled Lavender orpington rooster company. I'm not getting eggs right now, though because it is cold & I'm not using lights. Kathyinmo, where could I get rocks that look like yours in western Canada. I love my little hen, but yours are...

are the Orpington hens the best choice to be broody and be mothers?

What, roughly is the hatch rate for those of you using a broodie hen? Would you risk expensive eggs, or prefer to whip out the incubator?

    Lavendar X Barred

Thank you! With one Lavender orpington rooster (with a gimpy leg) and a barred rock hen to keep him company, I don't think I'll get 24 (minimum) eggs anytime soon! I wonder how well the barring would show up on the lavender? I love all the different colours....

    Lavendar X Barred

I'm new to backyard chickens and have a question. I understand that if you cross a lavendar orpington rooster over a barred rock hen, you will get black hens and black barred roosters. What happens in the second generation if you cross the black hens back to lavendar or if you cross the barred...
