Many thanks. We bought these two out of a straight run at TSC. Being a pessimist I am assuming we got the 1 in 4 chance of having 2 Roos. They were bought to replace my favorite girl named Chai who we lost three weeks ago to a darn hawk.
I have two BO chicks and I suspect they are both Roos. They are two weeks of age and have a little tuft of tail feathers already. You can see it in the terrible picture I attached. Thoughts?
Any ideas other than the bagged chick grit, which seems awfully hard to find around me? We can certainly order it online but it takes some time to ship. Is crushed limestone, which I used for my chicken run (the little ones are still in the brooder), ok for chick grit?
We lost one of our four girls yesterday to a hawk. They are four months old and have been free ranging without any predator protection for the majority of the time except at night, but mostly using the natural landscape as their protection (shrubs, trees, etc). We hadn't seen any hawks...
I bought crushed limestone sand, and I'll let you know how that works. It seems to hold a fair bit of moisture in it, and of course today it's raining all day. I'll probably try to find another option online but the local big box options are limited and I don't need 10 yards of sand from a...
I love this idea.
I'm new to raising chicks, and just getting ready to move them out to their temporary housing, which is a small pre-fab coop I bought online. It has a solid drawer/floor in the coop portion, but I think I might use this idea. What is your supplier for this?
Not a negative question here, but what is the reasoning behind the hardware mesh flooring in the coop? Are you assuming they are going to spend the majority of the time roosting and this allows for the poop to come through the wire and decreases your clean-out time?
I've been giving my girls corn on the cob and watermelon while they are in the chicken tractor from approximately 3 weeks on. I've been giving them chick grit since 2 weeks old. They've done fine with both of those. They LOVE corn on the cob, it's just really fun to watch how happy they get...
I do not miss the snow in April ( I grew up in upstate New York, essential south Canada). The weather in Atlanta has been pretty chilly at night, so I'm still waiting to take my most precious seedlings out of the greenhouse and plant them. I spent yesterday pushing 6 yards of mulch around. Of...
I've been bringing them outside to the tractor/playpen for 4-5 hours a day to graze on the grass and fertilize my lawn. They are 3 1/2 weeks old and pretty well feathered out already. It has been 75-80 degrees here in Atlanta this week in the sun, so they have been plenty warm out there. At...
That must have been a blast to glue all those pieces together! Trying to mentally juggle how many different T fittings and whatever you call a 4 way fitting you'd need must have been a challenge!
