Great to hear. Mine have fully integrated (The RIRs), the Wyandotts are still corrected every once in a while by the big guy, but it's very peaceful. It took about a week before I removed all the hidey holes.
Yeah my RIR is a rather pretty bird, not what I expected. Funny thing is he is 15 feet from my bedroom window and I can't hear him crowing in the morning and the nearest neighbor is about 300' away, but I can hear every Blue Jay, Crow, Cooper Hawk, Red Bellied Woodpecker, Cardinal, Dog, the...
My RIR boy started crowing a week ago, we were expecting it and knew he was a he (Fred) and that crow is pathetic like he has a collar on. Real raspy and weak and sounds pathetic - as you described.
Today while cleaning the grill (not in front of the chickens!) he crowed a little better and...
One of the easiest ways would be to put foam board in the walls of the boxes if they are outside. Eggs freezing would be my concern, and sheeting on the inside as well to keep the chickens from pecking at it. It will act more like a "styrofoam cooler" than a box so it will hold heat and...
Nice idea for a door. I still have the handle on the side pull door for mine doesn't lock without drilling a hole and using a pin or something. I might switch to this door when the time comes to replace it - only so many push pulls on that door before it will need it.
A 2 foot 1/4" hardware cloth apron around the enclosure covered with something - I prefer drainage rock/concrete rock as it's pretty cheap and easy to get in bags. I would not mesh or rocks under the run itself, you're going to have a much higher chance of foot problems doing that.
And they...
I just integrated and have seem the same thing but its resolving itself fast because of advise about blind spots and places they can run to that the big ones can't. I have been watching them closely. everyone is right about hiding spots. Spent the entire day with a water bottle ready to...
I wonder if a no crow collar would keep him quieter (not everyone agrees to use them) and solve the volume issue, and if it would then encourage the sub to start crowing more? My mind is around song bird behavior when mating though.
I have some 5 weeks and some 12 weeks, I was working on the door for the permanent coop where the 12 week olds are and had the grow out coop right outside next to it behind me, and one of the latches wasn't closed as I was working on it as well.
Im sitting there cutting on the hardware cloth...
GREAT response Mrs. K, and yes this was a very old thread but someone like me clicked it and read through it thinking similar to what you posted.
While some topics can and should have healthy debate, I think it's best to leave blunt objections of the methods used to a different discussion in...
Very true, once you see one, you've got a major issue. I had a neighbor who is a "buried alive level" hoarder who basically left her house abandoned with a hole in the roof from a huge tree falling on it for over a year. It was a mess.
The rest of the neighbors had to get the city involved...
I respect what you're saying, and I also respect that you're selling (I base that on your signature) a very good feeder that helps manage or eliminate the problem of easy access to food which is likely the biggest issue that people need to address or we wouldn't even be here talking about them...
Im surprised by that but I don't doubt there are situations where they will eat it no matter what or build up a tolerance to it - living things are complicated. Going to read the study because it sounds intriguing.
I've only got anecdotal evidence that they (squirrels, raccoons and rats)...
Fourth method. Sour the milk. This combined with the other methods above (steel cans, 1/4" hardware cloth everywhere) and I've stopped all varmint issues with Cole's Flaming Squirrel Seed Sauce. I don't know if it would cause issues with the crumble feed and pellets absorbing it and making it...
Hah you're probably good with what you describe so even the 1% can be managed easily. I'm thinking sideways rain that even up in TN happens from the remnants.
What you could do is just save the plywood to screw back in there isn't anywhere dry for them to get, if they do I wouldn't even...
