    Pet Peeves

    Calling a water heater a "hot water heater". It's very common in the south, but even my Dad (Texas born and raised) couldn't stand it. I remember as a kid him telling me "It's just a water heater, son. There ain't no point heating hot water".

    Nicely done!!! :thumbsup I'll only add what others have said, make sure to dig proof as well. Tacking hardware cloth to the base and extending it out at least a foot (cover it with soil) will be worth the effort.

    We used a couple of 2X4's about 2 feet high and 2 feet apart. We added a ramp and bridge so the gals had easy access to both... Definitely overkill, but when we had older, chunky hens it gave them options. It was a cold weather coop, so boards were wide side up to reduce frost bitten toes in...

    Heat wave tips?

    When I was in Oregon, we would set a spray nozzle on mist under a shade tree (turned down low). The gals got used to it, especially loved the wet soil, and we would set out chilled seedless watermelon to keep them with the program.

    Definitely "Mr Chicken", sorry. We've had some great roo's, but almost without exception they gradually turned pretty cranky (sometimes downright mean). Buff Orps are my favorites, but I've only dealt with hens. Best of luck!
