    Emu sitting inconsistently on eggs

So it's now 2021 - and we had another clutch of eggs - this time with 25!! The same emu as last year who tended the nest and sat for a little while is doing the same this year. But this year, he (I am presuming it is now a male) sat on the nest much earlier and is constantly tending to it. But...

    Emu sitting inconsistently on eggs

So how long before the emu realises that the eggs won't hatch and leaves the nest permanently? At the moment he is tending and guarding the eggs!

    Emu sitting inconsistently on eggs

Another development - the other day when Raptor (the emu who is sitting on the eggs) was away from the nest, I went to have a look and see what was happening. The eggs are now all out from under the sticks and leaves and in nice pile, all clean and together. 2 of the eggs were still about 2m...

    Emu sitting inconsistently on eggs

That's what all the information says - but we were told we had 3 female emus - and we are pretty sure that we have heard the 3 of them boom independently (the boom being the female sound).

    Emu sitting inconsistently on eggs

No - that's the thing - they would all have to be about 5 years old - but this is the first time they have laid eggs!

    Emu sitting inconsistently on eggs

I would be difficult to get water to near where she/he is. She/he only comes up for a bit and then goes back down to the nest. It's just it's been so long since the eggs were laid. The eggs have been covered with sticks and leaves for weeks and then the other day they had all been pulled out and...

    Emu sitting inconsistently on eggs

A few months ago I posted that we had found a clutch of emu eggs - after thinking we had 3 females emus. Well since then, I have seen one of the emus (Raptor) covering the nest with leaves and sticks. The eggs have been laid from July onwards. Then just 2 weeks ago Raptor stopped coming up for...

    Female emu setting a nest?

Thanks for the reply. As you thought - the emus are fenced into our property and a male would not be able to get in. There also don't seem to be any wild emus around our area. And we would definitely notice another emu in the midst :) And we do have a permit to keep native animals - so all is...

    Female emu setting a nest?

We were told we have 3 female emus (all 5 years old) and this year for the first time there are eggs! Initially we found 3 just scattered on the hard dirt in the open, but then a week later found a complete nest of 9 eggs - covered in leaves and sticks. So....do females set a nest and cover...

    Introduction!

We bought a property 19 months ago in the Clare Valley in South Australia which has 4 accommodation cabins as well as some interesting animals onsite. We have 2 chickens (we did have 4 but 2 have since died through age), 3 emus, 2 alpacas, 3 fallow deer, 2 cats and a border collie dog. The emus...
