I've done well keeping insects off my hens by throwing a handful of cedar chips under the spruce chips in their nest boxes. I know they say not to use cedar chips but it hasn't seemed to hurt my hens and they're bug free, except when they molt and don't use the nest boxes.
so, can you just tell us what a "dutchy" is?
i know that cedar shavings aren't supposed to be good for chickens respiratory systems but i sprinkle a thin layer beneath the spruce shavings in their nest boxes. in ten years, i've not found parasites or noticed the girls scratching unduly. nor do...
seems like a lot of trouble. i use the dog's toenail clippers to snip off the end of the bully's beak. it grows back after awhile but, often, allows enough time to modify bad behavior.
i caught the neighbors cat in a live trap, didn't want to kill it so sprayed it with a hose to discourage it. didn't work, cat was back within two weeks. now, it's too smart to be trapped. i've lost too many animals to cats. i'd like to get rid of it.
only humans exceed cats in a desire to kill...
i use spruce shavings for the nest boxes augmented with a handful of cedar shavings on the bottom. the cedar shavings keep the tiny critters away. at least, in ten years of raising chickens i've yet to have ticks, mites or lice on the chickens [or myself either].
i know it's said that cedar...
actually, the breed of dog is a consideration. in some places, pit bull ownership is illegal. even in places where one can own this breed, courts usually find the owners guilty for damages simply because this animal is bred to fight and kill. they aren't considered pets.
mister. i mean, the swamp cooler is optimum but requires more expense and engineering. here in arizona our temps hit 115 and my single orifice mister and shade cloth on the coop where the sun shines in works well. keep the shade cloth as high off the ground as you can and still block the sun to...
i like ccanoe's idea with a remote/switched thermostat, the thermostat placed in with the eggs and switching on your heater. for the heater, i've used a small fan space heater for my brooders. i don't see why it wouldn't work for incubating too considering i placed it outside the chicks...
"There are two members on this site who have reported their rooster died while wearing a no-crow collar "
do they attribute the deaths to the no crow collar?
sometimes adding a little sugar to the water for first timers makes them want to drink. i'm considering adding a bit of hummingbird food for first time chicks. it's sweet and has vitamins. any thoughts on this idea?
actually, the woman who rejected the chicks sounds responsible. mareks is hard to detect sometimes and she doesn't want it introduced into her flock. better to introduce only vaccinated birds. otherwise, worst case scenario she could lose her whole flock.
your chicks look healthy. read about...
new to the forum, i'm going to bail right in offending people.
i'm going to incubate some eggs soon and expect a half-dozen roosters. can't keep noisy animals so i thought about de-crowing one of them. can't afford the vet so i thought about doing it myself. hey, i know a vet who does animal...
