    The Ancona breeders thread

I have ancona hens in my commercial layers, they were originally from Murray McMurray. I have really liked their production, so this spring I selected 3 of my most productive females and placed them in a breeding pen with my male. I hatched 74 chicks from this mating 31 of which are pulleys...

BREEDING FOR PRODUCTION...EGGS AND OR MEAT.

My research isn't 100 percent accurate I' m sure but the Golden Comets were in the 4.2-4.5 lb. of feed per dozen eggs, Black Sex-Links were closer to 5. Anconas and Leghorns were the best of the Mediterranean breeds followed by Blue Andulusians and Minorcas. I make my own feed. We have a grinder...

Golden Comets or ISA Browns will give you excellent egg production. Their feed conversion will be second only to Leghorns. Their temperament will be exceptional, they are very friendly. The downside is their life expectancy is shorter than most other breeds.

BREEDING FOR PRODUCTION...EGGS AND OR MEAT.

Excellent question. Hatchery Minorcas have two things in common with standard birds. They are black and have white earlobes, that's it. I guess bottom line is I in some way want to keep the traditional type alive. They were very popular prior to the "leghorn age" I assure you it's not based on...

This is a pen of Silver Spangled Hamburgs. I had them as a child so I just wanted some again. I didn't incubate any eggs from them. I believe they were much larger years ago . These birds are very small. They lay decent but the eggs are small.

BREEDING FOR PRODUCTION...EGGS AND OR MEAT.

There are basically 5 groups . I acquired some birds from Richard Schock. I already had some utility type Minorcas. I am crossing production males on RS females, RS males on production females, and RS males on RS females. The utility birds are much smaller but their egg size is equal to if not...

BREEDING FOR PRODUCTION...EGGS AND OR MEAT.

One of our Blue Andulusian males we are using. We are breeding for production. We don't show. The hens are large and are extremely good layers. They are splashes, not good lacing but again we selected them based on performance , not color.

Parent stock for Austra Whites. We produce these for our commercial flock. Good layers. The hens are the Pearl strain of White Leghorns . The male is from a good producing Austrolorp strain..

Here is a photo of some of our breeding pens devoted to Minorcas. Not a great photo unfortunately. I have incubated about 200 eggs so far from 5 different breeding s.
