    Treating frostbite on a foot

One of out Brahma layer hens just got a finger frozen yesterday (it's been around 0 F for last two days here). It is limping and keeps the finger bent. There is no visible tissue damage. Should I give it antibiotics to prevent infection? Ot take it inside to the basement to warm up (I would have...

    Question about roosting bars

I installed two roosting bars expecting the two (slightly older) dominant chickens to take the upper one and the other four to take the lower one when they are ready to roost. Instead, the two are on the lower cross bar and the others are still on the floor two months later. Should I stop...

5 month old Wyandotte acting sick

No, this just started yesterday, she was happily roaming with the rest until then and no neck issues. We bought this one at Tractor Supply, they said they do the marek vaccination. Same for the dead rooster I'll try to observe how she eats/drinks

5 month old Wyandotte acting sick

Our 5 month old Wyandotte has been acting strange for two days, hiding in dark places, shaking its head and just standing in one place for a long time. And a rooster just died of unknown cause two days ago (we were away so didn’t see symptom progression for him). Any idea what this could be and...

12-week old Polish rooster found dying

Thank you! Yes, the rest are acting quite normal. They mostly eat layer feed pellets, with some treats like watermelon or boiled eggs. When we are home, they free range

12-week old Polish rooster found dying

After coming back from a 3-day weekend, we found our Polish rooster dying inside the coop. He was still breathing and opening his eyes but didn't move and refused to drink. The next morning he was gone. I'd like to know if this was more likely due to disease (and could it affect the other...

Are these 10wk Polish pullets or Roos?

Too bad! These are the only two Polish we got, but we also have two Silkies and RI Red about the same age and two older birds (Brahma & Wyandotte) which boss them around. Pretty sure they are all girls.

Are these 10wk Polish pullets or Roos?

Hi, not sure if these Polish chickens are old enough to tell from the photos (they should be about 10 weeks now). But would appreciate your opinions. The grey one has been acting a bit aggressive, hence the question. Pullets or roos?

    Flock integration question

Thanks! Run is about 200 sqf, 17x12. Some photos attached. The coop is part of a storage shed .

    Flock integration question

Thanks for the suggestions. The new birds are not from the same place but they are from an established hatchery.

    Flock integration question

Our flock is down to just two hens (one Brahma, one Wyandotte, both 3.5 month old) due to 3 (!) roosters and some predator losses. So we are adding 4 new pullets that are only slightly younger at 8-10 weeks, probably Buff Orpingtons and/or RI Reds. The coop (25 sqf) has be accessed from two...

How to secure the door of a chainlink kennel converted to a chicken run?

I see. So you suggest to have a skirt in the ground that is not attached to the door? Otherwise, how can i open and close it every day... That's a very good point, I didn't even think about that! I was going to cover the run from the top with garden fence wire or chicken wire. So perhaps there...

How to secure the door of a chainlink kennel converted to a chicken run?

I just corrected the original post, that wasn't what I meant. I meant adding the skirt and electrifying the fence as two separate things.

How to secure the door of a chainlink kennel converted to a chicken run?

Thanks The problem with attaching an HC skirt to the gate is that it wouldn't cover the gap between gate and posts and it won't prevent anyone from digging under.
