One week old chicks pecking each others vents

What seemed to work for us was the red light. We got one at Walmart. And I eliminated any other light. We drew spots on the sides of the bath tub they were in. And allowed it to get a little cooler in the room they were in. I don't know what helped, but something did, because they stopped.

Painting / Sealing wood inside chicken coop?

Thanks for the input... We are doing vinyl on the floor and part of the way up the wall. I was just concerned about painting it. So, it looks like I am on my way to get some white exterior paint.

Painting / Sealing wood inside chicken coop?

We are almost done with our first chicken coop. I was just wondering if anyone here knows if there are certain kinds of sealers or paints that can not be used on the inside of the coop. We framed it up with treated lumber, but the rest is untreated. We are painting the outside, and I wanted to...

At 3-4 weeks I will start taking them out for a few hours a day in a wire kennel to help transition them. Once outside they will be able to...

One week old chicks pecking each others vents

I have my husband cleaning bottoms and putting a dab of olive oil under their vents now to see if that will keep the poop from pasting up on their bottoms. I think maybe that is what caused the pecking to start. But the two that are hurt are really worrying me. One is torn up pretty bad, and...

    Bath tub brooder and playtime!

I am also using a bathtub in an unused bathroom. I put duct tape over the drain to keep the litter from falling into it. I am cleaning the litter out with a kitty litter scoop. When the chicks are ready to leave the tub I will remove all of the litter with the scoop , take the tape off of the...

One week old chicks pecking each others vents

We just got our babies yesterday around lunch. Everything was fine until this evening. The chicks started pecking at each others vents (bottoms) and tearing them open. I am freaked out. I have no idea what to do. We have been cleaning their bottoms of any built up poop and unclogged one vent...
