She finally quit!! 3 nights on that chicken wire which made her stand around most of the day did the trick. I felt bad for her feet, but it was truly the only thing that brought her back to a normal life.
I've de-broodied many hens successfully in the past, but this one hen is beyond me. Everything has failed, so yesterday we put regular chicken wire in the dog crate and a 4" distance of the ground. We initially put in a 4x4 piece of wood, but then she just squats on that; it seems she would...
My Maran hen started getting broody about 8 days ago. For the last 4 nights I've kept her in the dog crate I've always used (successfully) in the past with her and other hens. Nothing on the crate floor (just the plastic bottom) other than food and water. The first day and a half she ate a bit...
Our neighbor has 8 free ranging Guinea fowl. Every year around this time, one or tow of them make a sound they don't make at any other time of the year, and it lasts about a month. It's a very rhythmic, almost man made sound; it has two beats. It's like a ka-CHINK, ka-CHINK, ka-CHINK etc. Unlike...
Setting up a separate cage for her isn't an option, unfortunately. Trying to feed her separately is almost impossible, too, since the others will immediately come running to steal her food, even though they have their own. I'd rather take the current feeder away and go back to how it was before.
We have 10 out of 11 hens that finally got how to use Grandpa's feeder. The last one, a VERY old (10+) year old hen, who has always been on the shy side, and is pretty low on the pole, did originally step on the treadle and feed during the first week of set up when the lid is wide open and...
This is entirely theoretical, as I offer grains to my 11 hens, but here's the question anyway: they live on 3/4 of an acre in coastal California near San Francisco--grass from beginning of January through end of May. The rest of the year there isn't much greenery, but still lots of dirt and...
