I live outside of Cape Girardeau Missouri(southeast Missouri). I have been raising buff brahma chickens since 2014. Before that I tried several other breeds and mixed birds over a nine year period, but chose brahmas as my favorite. I like them because they don't peck each other, are not...
I would separated the males out into a different pen at about 4 months. At eight months I would select the two I liked the best. Next spring I would put the favorite rooster in with the hens and raise a hatch off him. Then take him out and place the other one with the hens for about 1.5...
I've had brahmas for about six years and I've always gave them all they would eat without any problems. I give them 16% layer in the spring-fall and a 20% all flock over the winter when they aren't laying.
The brahmas I've had are so calm they probably won't bother the kids at all. My daughter and her friends use to catch and hold my brahmas when they were only six or seven years old. The brahmas never pecked or spurred them.
I've got a buff brahma rooster that weighs 13 pounds 9 ounces. They are the biggest chickens I have ever raised. I've had some jersey giants but they didn't get as big as my brahmas.
