Aw poor thing! I had a hen do this recently but unfortunately she didn't make it. I believe hers was due to some kind of respiratory illness.
Is she/has she been sneezing? Any nasal discharge or watery eyes? Is she still eating and drinking?
If you haven't already, I would separate her just...
Holy cow! I have just read your thread and wow.
I am going to count myself lucky that I only appear to have one or two crows hanging around and only one that steals eggs (for now)!
I am reluctant to waste my electricity on playing sounds to deter them though I will definitely keep it in mind...
Hi everyone! I was hoping you could help me with a free range related question.
My flock has always free ranged from sun up until sun down when they are then locked in their coop for the night. The last couple of days I have been noticing eggs missing from their nesting boxes and this morning...
I usually wait until they have all gone to bed in the coop so I don't have to catch them individually! I then use olive oil in a spray can to spray there legs. I do it about every second day until their legs are all better.
I hope this helps and good luck with your flock
I'm so sorry about your little chick. You are in no way a horrible person. You did everything you could to bring her back to health and her choking was nothing more than an accident.
I would take this all as a learning experience for next time.
Hi everyone. I have to say this thread makes me only want to buy silkies ever again!
I currently only have two silkie hens but one went broody on dud eggs and has subsequently adopted five chicks (two of which are silkies)!
Here are my girls when I first got them.
I found my missing chook and yes she was brooding!
On a similar note, another one of my broodies who has been sitting on dud eggs for 3 weeks happily adopted some bought chicks last night
I certainly do count myself lucky that I don't have to deal with raccoons!
I guess I just have to cross my fingers that nothing else gets/got her and I will see in about three weeks.
Hi everyone! I have a quick semi broody relates question. I have read a couple of stories on here about hens disappearing for three weeks only to return with chicks. I was just wondering what these runaway broody hens are eating during this time? Do they come back to their normal feeding place...
