    Gotcha! I was told and sold a chick with a red dot on her beak and was told that was a RIR trait... Not sure but, that's what I meant by that. Thanks again.

    She's not a Rhode Island Red because there was no red dot on her beak. I got a Rhode Island Red in addition to her and they look quite different. I will research "Production Red" I am not familiar with that... Thanks!

    Can anyone tell wheat breed my chick is? She is 3 weeks old, so it may be too soon to tell for sure. Was listed as a Buff Orphington, but her coloring has become questionable....

    What breed is this chick?

    It may be too soon to tell, but I thought this was a Buff Orphington, but I am no so sure anymore because her feathers look more reddish than buff... Got her at a feed store. Can anyone tell what she may be?
  7. New brooder- it's 4 x 6 and will house 6 chicks for a while. Love the sand bedding so much more than the pine woodchips. Sprinkled PDZ in with the sand. The chicks (not pictured here) love the sand too! We have a lid we cover it with to keep the big chicks from flying out.

  8. Little chick side. The panel is easily removed so they can all be together when they are sized more similarly. The Australorps are quite a bit bigger right now. Chicks grow sooo fast though! Maybe next week they can be together.

    Our Brooder for different aged chicks

    This way our 3 week olds and 1 week olds can be together but separate. When they are similar sized we can remove the separator and they can be together. I love to watch them socialize.

    Anyone use SAND in the run/coop

    We are going to use sand. After researching it seems to be our best bet. Crossing my fingers the chickens like it and do well.

    We had a hard time removing the metal clip as well. Ours came from a feed store where they mark the Pullets. We watched a youtube video on how to remove it and she does it so quickly, but ours seemed to be deeper into the wing and stuck. We got some antibiotic gel and got the area wet and...

    We recently discovered ours like to chase a laser light. Out of 7 only 1 was acctually terrified of it so we stopped. The others loved it though.

    This is a great thread. I was wondering the same thing... is it worth the cost to roof the run and would the chickens be happier or ? I am in Texas- we have mild winters but scorching summers and I am going to use sand as litter so after reading your replies- we are for sure roofing the run...
