2 chicks with sudden limp on same side?

Thank you for responding! The brooder is a repurposed rabbit pen my husband built a few years back when one of our rabbits had babies, and it's plenty big in the main part for the hen to stand and jump and do whatever she needs to do, but in the back where she has her nest it is a bit small for...

2 chicks with sudden limp on same side?

This is the older one and it’s hard to see if there’s bruising obviously because it has dark feet but it won’t put any weight at all on it. I feel so bad for them 😭

2 chicks with sudden limp on same side?

This is the younger one- it has bruising all along the leg and the bottom of the foot has a dark bluish tint to it. It will put weight on it, but still limps.

2 chicks with sudden limp on same side?

This is my first hatch, and I have one chick that hatched 2.5 weeks ago and 3 that hatched a little less than 2 weeks ago. The first chick was absolutely thriving, same with the others until this morning. Last night none of them showed signs of lameness or lethargy, but I go down this morning...

Egg a dud or late bloomer?

So an update: we now have 5 more chicks, and I just candled the remaining eggs today. 1 never developed so we cracked it and there was just yolk. The egg that was originally in question had absolutely no air cell or signs of an embryo AND it was beginning to smell like fishworms.....so I told my...

Egg a dud or late bloomer?

Thank you again for all your help. I'll probably take it outside and crack it tomorrow if there's no signs of life by then.

Egg a dud or late bloomer?

Oh no, that's what I'm afraid of!!! I hate the thought of seeing a dead chick in there but I'm scared of it being rotten, too....maybe I'll just have my husband check for me and report back 😂

New layers starting to eat eggs

When my girls were first laying (they're 2 years old now and lay every day, no problems), we did have some that would like to eat the eggs. This was usually when there was already a crack in one and it broke when they laid on it, or just out of curiosity I suppose, because they're always...

Egg a dud or late bloomer?

I’ll try that tomorrow if no sign of life. It’s definitely disheartening to lose some chicks but it is my first hatch and through this experience I can learn how to hopefully make the process smoother next time. I’m sure my hen will go broody again after this clutch hatches (or doesn’t). But...

Egg a dud or late bloomer?

I used the brightest flashlight (LED) I could find and a toilet paper tube covered in electrical tape. I worked very well candling before they got too far along, and I have used my phone flashlight as well to candle when they were in the early stages of embryo development. Right now it all looks...

Egg a dud or late bloomer?

Thank you so much for all your advice! I love that adaptation, and will have to try it for sure. I used the brightest flashlight I could find and a toilet paper tube covered in electrical tape, but it seemed like there was no air cell at all...does that mean it’s probably rotten?

Egg a dud or late bloomer?

Thank you!! I have all my fingers and toes crossed we’ll have some sweet babies soon, haha!

Egg a dud or late bloomer?

Oh no! That’s good to know then. I read a sticky post on here talking about how to perform it so I had no idea it could potentially harm the chick. I feel badly that I tried it now... And I must need to buy a “professional” candler or get a much brighter lightbulb because I tried candling it...

Egg a dud or late bloomer?

Hello! So as some background, this is my first hatch. My Australorp is very broody so we finally got a rooster to give her some good eggs to lay on, and we started out with 5 viable eggs initially (candled around 3 days and could see embryos starting). Unfortunately, a few days later, she...

    Howdy!

Hello, and thank you! 💓 Duke is the most laid-back rooster I've ever met, so when we let him and the girls roam during the day he mostly just sticks with them and doesn't pay us much attention. (My daughter is small, loud, and fast, so they usually run away from her if she tries to pet them...
