Yup pretty short days here. Over the last 2 weeks the eggs have really slowed down- the dark LF pullet is probably just old enough to start laying and may have started as I recently started finding very round pullet eggs- unusual shape compared to my other girls. The LF jubilee hen has almost...

2 questions... How many weeks do your Cornish typically lay for? I was about to start everyone under lights this week, but I'm leaving for a week at the end of July and don't want to miss out on fertile eggs for hatching. Hubby doesn't know it yet but he is going to build me a second coop so I...

    Cornish Thread

To put it in perspective it took me about 18 months to find some decent looking Cornish, and I got lucky that one of the 4 I purchased is a WLR hen. I'm waiting until she finishes moulting to put up any pics of her as she is def a bit scraggly looking right now. Fingers crossed she is still...

    Cornish Thread

Wow, did anyone else have trouble finding this thread on the new interface? I tried searching for it but no dice. My new pullet and cockerel finally decided they could sleep on the roost with the big chickens (provided they have a step up)! They must be growing up :). The old hen seems to be...

Along the same lines, what is the height of your next boxes? I'm convinced that the hen is just too big to get up there. She has established herself as "HBIC". Was quite entertaining to watch- my Isa Brown's have been downright vicious any time I have introduced pullets before- they get to...

Do you find that you have to offer your Cornish lower roosts than for your other breeds? I integrated the Cornish that I acquired this week. The dark pullet has decided to sleep in the nest boxes. the cockerel has decided to sleep on the stairs. I added a low roost because the hen is quite...

    Integrating adult roosters

Just a quick update- sometimes even the best laid plans go out the window! The good- brought home 4 birds (2 cockerels, 1 pullet, 1 hen). The bad- TC Debbie forced me to revisit my quarantine ideas as I needed to move all the birds to a more secure location after only 2 weeks. We are lucky...

    Rooster molt

I've never had one take longer than 16 weeks to crow and most are trying earlier than that. Are you sure they are roosters? What breed are they? I know some breeds like silkies are really hard to sex so maybe you lucked out and have pullets?

    Rooster molt

One of my roosters is moulting right now. It has slowed him down to the point where our juvenile rooster has flipped the flock dynamic and taken over as chief boss. He is still treating the ladies well but they seem to be less interested in him so yes I think it can affect their breeding...

    Disable pullet shut door

Thank you! I will rig up some kind of cover for it for the future. Flipping the solar panel also worked.

    Disable pullet shut door

Hello Those of you that have pullet shut doors- do you know off the top of your head his to temporarily disable them? We are having extensive landscaping done tomorrow and I had to take down the electronegative run temporarily. I want everyone to stay locked up in the coop until the work is...

Are you experiencing unusually bad weather? Any other chicks in the batch looking poor? My first Cornish were from ideal. I lost one chick out of the lot of 12 (red broilers and Cornish) but the rest did great. I would disinfect your brooder, make sure you have adequate heat, and try reshipping.

    Preparing for floods

Good news- it's stopped raining. And, under the house stayed nice and dry. We fared much better than areas north of us- no structural damage at all. Bad news- we are stranded. But we have power and plenty of food.

    Preparing for floods

Thank you. I'm not sure that under the house will get them up enough at all. We have plenty of space to move them inside- just not necessarily in cages/pens. I am going to try to leave work early today and cull the roosters. The pen they are in is the most mobile and it would be possible to get...

    Preparing for floods

So, Cyclone Debbie is working her way through QLD right now. Flooding is forecast for our area starting on Thursday and I'm trying to figure out what the heck to do with everyone. Right now I have 3 separate pens of birds. Pen 1: small tractor with cull roosters. Worst case maybe I will...
