I am so happy to have found your post. My 4 year old rooster might have Newcastle disease. I managed to nurse him through the bad breathing problems initially. Then just as he looked to be getting better, he suddenly became lame almost overnight! I brought him into the house and I have a sort of...
I was afraid that might be it… some tumour somewhere… she waxes and wanes so much and I’ve given her antibiotics, antifungals, dewormed her… thrown the entire pharmacy at her.
I don’t think I could do the deed myself. I’ll look for a vet who is confident enough to make it quick and painless...
Chickens like Orpingtons aren’t readily available in my area. I only have 4 now… or really just 3 and a half, looking at how sick that girl is.
She’s been in my living room for 6 weeks now, she’s almost part of the furniture! I’ll just keep on doing what I’m doing and hope for the best.
But...
Chicken sick
I have a 1yr old Orpington hen who has been unwell for about 6weeks now.
When she first came to me as a pullet, she had coccidiosis and worms… both treated. She was laying well until 6wks ago when she laid a a fairy egg and then a soft shelled egg.
She developed a fever and...
@Kabootar You’re fortunate to have been able to hone your skills on many roos. For some of us, we may just have a handful of birds in a backyard flock. In my part of the world, heritage chooks are hard to get a hold of. And if one winds up with more Roos than hens, then it’s either the pot or...
I ended up caponising one roo as a trial to see how it goes. I’ve copied and pasted my post fr another thread for anyone who might be interested.
I did the procedure together with a vet friend with help from YouTube tutorials. We gave intramuscular anaesthesia which was titrated. Anyone...
I only caponised one of them. I’ve decided whose genes I want passed on cos he’s got the handsomest colours. The runt of the 3 was getting a little obnoxious so I caponised him. The middle child so far is not giving any problems so I’ll hold off the procedure and see how they get along.
I...
At that stage (like in the pics), I was really holding out all hope... but they declared themselves at about 12 weeks with their feathering.
This is how two of them look like now. And of course, 2 out of 3 are crowing.
@Thechickentrainer1999 I know where you are coming from because I wound up with 4 Roos and 2 hens in my present flock.
I searched this forum and many other places for info on capons as well as the procedure. As OP has mentioned, not much from actual owners... a lot of it was just postulates...
Avian vets for backyard chickens is a niche obviously begging to be filled. @GerbilsOnToast, it would be great if I could bring my Roos over to you for their snip-snip!:p
The pellet implant is called Suprelorin and I was told by the vet that it costs about $100 and lasts 3-6mth only. But it is really hard to find a vet willing to take the risk with surgical caponisation.
