I have one that I thought was a rooster until "he" laid an egg and "he" mounts my other hens all the time and is one of my best layers. I'm told that the lack of a rooster one hen will take up the job, sort of.

Funny post.
I have 12 hens, mixed breeds, some started laying at 15 wks and are now 21wks. I'm averaging 10 eggs per day for the past week, is that good? Also, one of hens has been laying double yolks almost 100% since day one, the last one weighed 80 grams, any ideas as to what that...

I doubt anyone with an open mind will be offended. My coop name "Mother Cluckers" got me in hot water with those not so open minded, but gutter minded types, ya win some ya lose some. You just can't control what people think.

My new 16 week old hens are laying on the floor inside the coop and not using the nest boxes, any suggestions on how to encourage them to use the boxes. I've made them 14" on all sides and raised off the floor but lower than the perches. Maybe I'm just being impatient as this is only my 3 rd egg...

It's dust bathing, I sometimes have three in the same hole throwing dirt on each other, pretty funny to watch them contort their bodies to cover every inch, then they get up and shake it all of. It's amzing how a white hen stays white from doing this.

My hens are 16 weeks old and I had never heard that "call" before the last three days and I suspected it was "I just laid an egg call" and sure enough, this morning I heard it again and ran out and sure enough there lay my 3 rd egg, still warm. While in the coop earlier, that same hen...
I have one roo and 11 hens, (not by choice but we like him) all 16 weeks old. I'ts been suggested that we get rid of the roo if I'm only interested in eggs because I will be getting blood spots in my eggs. Is this true? Do you have to candle the eggs if you have a roo if we collect them daily...

Gas and fire is seldom a good mix, pouring a flamable liquid underground is also not a good idea as you could ignite a ground fire that could burn for a very long time without you knowing it. I've seen it happen. Instead of spending your money on gas buy the appropriate wasp killer...

I agree chicken wire is rather useless and very difficult to work with which is why I didn't use it. I used 18 gauge welded wire in two sizes, 1"x1" and 1/2" x 1/2". It's considerably more expensive but offers absolute peace of mind and how much is that worth...

I agree painting does make a coop look pretty but then it becomes an ongoing responsibilty and expense as the paint fades and if you don't maintain it, it begins to look pretty ratty. Because of that and because of previous experience I chose to not paint my coop inside or out and...

We have a stool we keep just outside the run to stay clean but we bring it in when we visit with treats. Otherwise we can watch them from our deck.

Hi there Skittleinaustin, thank you for the kind words. The entire roof of my coop is covered in 1"x1" weled wire including around the tree. I've added another picture showing the roof from the underside if you'd like to take another look. I framed around the tree leaving space for...

The best suggestion in my opinion is an enclosed and covered run like mine. https://www.backyardchickens.com/web/viewblog.php?id=63059-mother-cluckers
