I know there was supposedly a monthly meeting happening for the Western Washingtonians, but I dont know if it is still going or not? Rainwolf, any updates?
You can start to integrate them when the younger birds are roughly 2/3 the size of the full grown birds. It is best to rig something up that will let the older birds see the younger ones, but are not able to physically contact them for at least a couple of days. This gives them some time to...
I didnt give any of my baby birds grit until my most recent batch. If its warm outside you can take them out for short, supervised trips and theyll probably peck through the dirt and get a little sand/grit on their own. They don't need much when they are that young because the chick starter feed...
It kind of sounds like the differnece is primarily cosmetic. Play sand has a consistent size and is cleaned, so that the kids/pets playing in it dont come out looking like coal miners.

I did buy one of each and there was a big difference. The play sand was just sand. The other had...
Jeeez! Ok, yeah I'm not that worried since she looks really healthy, I was just curious, it seemed strangely long to go without laying considering my other 3 hens basically laid straight through the winter with very little supplemental lighting.

In other news, I was wondering whats the longest a young hen has gone without laying an egg. I have one bird that has to be getting near a year old and she laid one...ONE... egg last summer, august or september sometime, and has not done anything since. She is at the bottom of the pecking...

For what it's worth, I've never heard a word against you.
I had a great experience with tailfeathers' birds. He was extremely friendly and took the time to show me around his farm and talk about birds on a couple of occasions. I think he does a great job with his breeding...
Hello other Washingtonians, I just wanted to say I was bummed to have missed the meeting last night, although the artwalk was fun. I look forward to attending the meetings in the future. I am at the very north end of Ravenna in Seattle, and I have 5 chickens a couple ducks, and maybe some...
Is he younger than the hens? I had a rooster that kept trying to assert dominance over the older dominant hen and he had pecked her saddle feathers pretty badly. The other non dominant hen had no trouble at all. I wound up removing him from the flock (he was tasty) because I didnt want him...
I read that the most humane way to kill a chicken is actually with a thin knife. Quickly insert the knife through the mouth straight back. This pierces the brain and spinal column, killing them instantly, and supposedly paralyzing them as well. I havent tried it myself, it seems a little too...
I had a young cockerel that was trying to establish dominance over the hen at the top of the pecking order. (He never succeeded before turning into dinner) In doing so he pecked and damaged a lot of the feathers on her saddle and the top of her head. The base of the feathers are still in tact...
I have three chickens, one that is about seven months old and two younger that are about three months old. Of the two younger pullets one is much larger than the other (almost bigger than the older buff orp). She occasionally kind of bites and holds on to the feathers at the back of the other...
Yes I had a BO, as well that went broody. She started laying about a month and a half ago, layed every day for a month. Then went broody all the sudden and wouldnt leave the nest and stopped laying, even though there were no eggs in the nest with her. Every day I just took her out of the nest...
I was wondering if anyone knew of any Marans or Welsummer breeders in Western Washington, or anyone just selling fertile eggs or chicks. I would rather not buy through a hatchery, but I live in the city and therefore cannot order and keep the standard 25 egg minimum from breeders elsewhere in...
