how old is too old to butcher?
I sure was happy to find this thread. I have some Barred Rock hens that are about 18 months old and my other half is looking forward to having them fill the freezer. But I must say that the roosters we butchered, as well as the egg-eating hen who also pecked everyone else's feet, were just plain...- Tuckerbelle

How do you do it??
The only names my birds have are "casserole!" I thought it would be difficult to kill them, but have found it is not so. The only difficult part of it is keeping them calm just prior the actual kill. If the ones in line get a whiff of blood, it is harder to keep them calm. If you can gather them...- Tuckerbelle

It has been my experience that Vaseline will not help or prevent frostbite. My Barred Rock rooster had black tips just like what the photo that Johnn posted. The tips eventually dry and fall off. Watch them closely for infection, though. If that happens, the infected part will need to be trimmed...- Tuckerbelle
