Checked on her today and she was making happy clucking sounds instead of distressed ones, which was a welcome improvement!
Gave her 2 tbsp yogurt mixed with rice (thinking the BRAT diet here?), she ate most of that and more of her feed.
We have some water with a bit of apple cider vinegar in...
UPDATE: Sorry for being MIA, it was a busy day!
When I checked on Gouda this afternoon, she seemed perkier and less fluffed up, no straining. She pecked at her feed, even! I gave her 1 tsp of refrigerated coconut oil and left her alone.
I just checked on her (5 hours later) and she's laying...
I'll try the coconut oil, we have some! Her vent is possibly a bit swollen and more pink than normal, but not crusted. It's now contracting like it should when stimulated. Forgot to add that the liquidy discharge is pretty foul smelling!
I'll see if she eats a chicken feed/scrambled egg combo...
I can give crushed Tums a try! Here are some photos, she was squirming quite a bit so hard to get a good one. She's not straining now since I soaked her vent an hour ago, but I can try to get a video of it once she starts again
She hasn't been laying eggs recently, but the last eggs we saw were normal with hard shells. I haven't seen any solid poop from her other than this whitish liquid discharge (thinking it's diarrhea but not sure).
Yesterday I inserted a gloved finger in her vent (using lube) and couldn't feel...
Hi everyone,
We have a very sad chicken at our house. Gouda is a 1-year-old bantam hen (Double Silver-laced Barnevelder) who has been straining to either poop or lay an egg for the past 2 days, with no improvement.
Here's the story: Thursday evening we discovered her in the coop, making these...
Wow that's crazy! Good thing you waited so long!
Update - 1 chick has hatched, at least 1 other egg has pipped, and mama hen appears to be doing her job! The chicks are all bantam Barnevelders, and we're starting to wonder how we're going to tell them all apart...
Wow, I can't imagine having to wait 29 days! That takes some impressive patience. And yes, I've heard that "chicks can't tell time"... so I suppose I'll have to wait till they're ready! I candled them at day 18 and all 5 were developing normally, so all should be OK, but I always have that...
Hi everyone!
This is my second round hatching chicks under a mama hen (first time didn't go so well, mama hen decided to scalp the first chick!). Hatching eggs under a DIFFERENT mama hen this time, day 21 and... well, all is quiet. No pips (that I can see, though don't want to stress out mama...
donrae, I actually don't know what hatchery the birds came from- the person who ordered the chicks wanted to keep everything top secret! I'm guessing it is probably Murray McMurray, Cackle, or Meyer, but I really don't know for sure unfortunately.
Any other ideas on the rooster?
An Olive...
Hi everyone!
As a fun 4-H project, our club decided to buy a "grab bag" of chicks so that we could all try to identify them. I've been able to identify most of them, but some have been a little more of a challenge. Can you solve the mystery?
Chicken #1: Actually, this is a rooster, and he is...
Update: This morning I checked on the hen, and she had laid an egg! Her right eye was half-open, which was an improvement. I let her out of her box, and placed a shallow dish of chicken feed in front of her to make sure she could eat on her own. Her beak was still partially open, and she didn't...
Good news- this morning she was awake and alert, clucking and scratching around in the box I set up for her. Her beak was partially open, but she was eating and drinking despite obvious vision problems (she kept pecking for water a few centimeters away from the actual waterer, but she quickly...
One of our chickens, a 1-year-old bantam, got its head stepped on today. She's a very friendly hen, and unfortunately she got a little too close to my brother's foot. He put a considerable amount of weight on her head before he realized what was happening. Now only one eye is open, her right eye...
