Update on Penny the broken legged pullet! She is doing much better. I changed the splint today and I can tell where the break is/was. It's beginning to calcify and I can tell she is not as uncomfortable. We have let her out with the other pullets and she hops on one leg for the most part but...
She is doing very well. Her name is Penny, by the way. Her foot seems fine. Circulation appears to be good. I will re-splint it Friday. Unless the Vet wrap/splint slips down, I won't mess with it more than necessary.
Awesome! Thanks. Yes, pullet. I was raised on a dairy without chickens. The terminology sometimes escapes me. Pullet = heifer vs. Hen = Cow. ;) kind of.
Well, it's a broken leg. This morning when I checked her again, it was much more obvious. There is swelling of the leg and foot and it felt less stable. Not a bad break though. I added a few pics to show what I used to splint. I had an old finger splint. Cut the end off and smoothed it off...
OOPS! Obviously I am still learning. Aside from a chick not standing up (I used a tiny sling for a few minutes several times a day plus a little chick physical therapy - stretching legs and moving them - she recovered!) I don't have experience with an adult chicken and a sling. Since she is...
Right now we have her in a brooder with food and water with electrolytes. I gave her a scrambled egg and she isn't interested in it. We have a wire dog crate but it is not readily accessible so, tomorrow we will get it set up. I noticed her lameness right after lunch today. She doesn't have...
Thanks
Thank You.
We have her set up in our brooder (which is a luxury suite for chicks). Before I secluded her, she was eating grass and weeds with the other chickens and went to the coop to roost. Other than not wanting to use that leg, she seems fine.
We let our 16 week old hens free range today and one of our Easter Egger hens is now not standing on one of her legs. She tries to use it when she walks and gets around but, mostly sits around. I picked her up and felt her bones. Nothing obviously broken, no bumble foot, no blood, no missing...
