Hello from the southeastern side of Tennessee. Congratulations on your new flock. They are cuties! First chicks are so special. Just wait until they start laying—so fun. Be careful though….these could be the first of many if you’re like a lot of us here! 😅 I hope you enjoy having chickens as...
Hooray! Glad you found some chicks, even if it wasn’t exactly what you were looking for. Those sound like wonderful breeds. I love a colorful egg basket. I mostly hatch my own eggs to replenish my flock, but unexpectedly found myself needing some hatching eggs this year due to some losses from...
I love my heat plates for brooding chicks. They are safer and also easier than heat lamps in my opinion. Only negative is the price, but I’ve been using the same one for about 7 years, so it is a good investment, especially if you plan to have chickens for a long while.
Thanks for your time and feedback.
I have always kept one rooster in with my 20 hens and have had a 70-80 percent (sometimes better) hatch rate. But in batch 1 only 8:24 eggs hatched. Batch 2 is still incubating but on day 14 it looks like twelve out of thirty are good.
Maybe I need a new...
Hello everyone! I’m just curious how much rooster fertility declines each year.
I’ve hatched out dozens of chicks from eggs laid by my flock over the last several years, but this spring it looks like the majority of eggs are not developing. The poor results of test batch #1 could be explained...
My autodoors have been very reliable. If you were worried about them not working when you were away, you could put a trail cam next to your coop that you could check from your phone. If the door failed to open or close one day, you could just call a neighbor or someone close by to fix it.
Hello everyone! It was a pleasant surprise to be included in this thread. Life has been busy with young kids and animals and a new job (I ended up quitting and returning to the old job).
We lost one of our German Shepherds to cancer in the fall…so I guess my username should be OneShepherd now...
I love having an auto-door. I use the Ador auto door. I have a few petty complaints, but overall I liked it enough to get a second one when I made my second coop. About every 6 months, the door won't open in the morning, and I realize that it needs a new battery. Sometimes it will fail to open...
I've been wearing out my incubator this year. I have lots of chicks. They range from 2 days old to 3 weeks. Breeds are splash ameraucana, black copper marans, and olive egger (splash Ameraucana rooster over bcm hens). We're located in Bradley county, TN. We're not far from Chattanooga.
