When I eat chia, I soak it in coconut milk and add nuts and unsweetened coconut shreds, vanilla and stevia. The reason I don't feed it dry to chicks is because it will clump into a gelatinous mass if not stirred almost continuously for the first 10+ minutes. I grind milo coarsely for chicks...
Can you compare leg shank size of others the same age? I bought bargain chicks at tsc, some pale purple with pink wing feathers starting! Bought them all just to see what they were. They eventually looked like blue laced red wyandottes, very pale and unimpressive. But the most remarkable...
My green shelled pip did almost exactly what yours did, black wet chick all happy and moverin around strong! The brown shell had pipped at the same time, but hasn't zipped yet. I'm so glad to know about the 24hr-ish period between internal pip and external so I didn't jump the gun! Learn so...
So glad to find this thread, and thanks for the commitment to finishing the story!
I selected all my EE green shelled eggs plus one light brown for a clutch, but my home cobbled incubator is not consistent with temp, so the 2 chicks that are peeping now are doing it against all odds! The other...
Now I see the 1x2, thought it was 1" square mesh before. Melon boxes is a great idea! I've been brooding and raising my chicks in appliance boxes, but those look so much better and stronger.
I use deep litter method pine shavings, 5 inches or so deep, which settles some. And throwinf some feed across gets the girls to scratch around and keep it stirred up. I add fresh when needed, very little, and clean it all out once a year.
One year I cleaned it out too early, thought April...
Where can I find that one inch mesh fencing?
I bought a small cage made from this at a yardsale 20 years ago for 1 buck, and I have used it over and over. The cage was made to be a turtleproof fish basket, rectangular with top access lid, but i have used it as a cat carrier, daily chick...
Agreed! I find it easier to snap a pic without using the flash. After 2 or 3, they take all the noises in stride and the next pic is worth waiting for. Such noise for a digital camera!
Following. I have EEs and Brown leghorns that are similar, but they (mine) most likely won't lay brown. I know other breeds may also start out like this, so I'm eager to see what everyone thinks.
I picked up a handful of what appear to be brown leghorn chicks from Tractor Supply in north Tx, which uses Privett hatchery out of NM. I got them clearanced at 50c each, and bought waaay more chickens than I should have! I think I have 8 BLs, 2 of which had enormous red combs at 4 weeks or...
I have a tractor supply chick that started out yellow with a hint of tan on its head and looks like these cream and tan at this age also. Legs look green, not slate. Clean legged, rose comb or maybe buttercup? I know this is an old thread, but it never got resolved and I've been searching all...
Btw, my EE chicks are either like brown leghorns or buff/yellow with similar brown or black face markings like eye stripe and dark line on top of head. All have cheek puffs and greenish dark legs, 3 weeks old.
