Chicken scared to go into the coop

So, I have an update, although this is late, it is exciting. The chicken has 'gotten it'. Over the last two nights this chicken has gone in on its own. Every single night I went out placed the chicken in front of ramp, and would wait. Sometimes for a couple of minutes. And then it would wonder...

Chicken scared to go into the coop

Small update here. We have gotten the chickens that were for a friend to my friend. We have watched this chicken closely, and it seems that it is in the middle of the pecking order, not the bottom. We have had multiple nights where it has gone right into the coop, and nestled in with all the...

Chicken scared to go into the coop

Thanks for the feedback. Space is as noted. 24 SQ feet, with 4 additional sq feet of nesting boxes. The run is about another 200 SQ FT, and is always open to them. We have on occasion let them out to roam the rest of the yard, but that isn't fenced in so we watch pretty closely as they do that...

Good question. Not shown well in the picture is that the north and south walls have a 3 inch gap above them for the roof, allowing the free flow of air. I figure I will stuff that with straw as needed in the winter. Maybe it won't work out, but we'll see. I am with you on the ramp. We ended up...

Chicken scared to go into the coop

After I got your most I went out and immediately put the bird in the coop, despite it being 23:30. I will continue to watch it. My coop should have enough space. Without the nesting boxes and roosting bars I have 24 square feet for the 21 birds. Mind you some of these birds won't be with me...

Chicken scared to go into the coop

Something of an odd experience. My little flock is 21 birds made up of Barred Rock and Buff Orpingtons. They are 7.5 weeks old right now, and I got straight runs, so not fully sure my mix of Roosters and Hens. At 6 weeks old we moved the chickens from the brooder to their new coop. The first...

    Hungry Birds

I am no expert, and very new to chickens, but my chickens are a week older than yours. I found much the same, that I could not keep enough starter feed there for them, and they were getting to big for my brooder. So, I made a coop, moved them out to it (they were 5 1/2 weeks old when they...

Additional feeder and water inside coop?

Because they are so messy I have been keeping all the food and water outside. As long as they can get to it in the morning I have found no negative effect at all.

So, new to chickens and you guys have been super helpful so far, thanks. I decided to build my own coop, as I needed one that was larger than most commercial units. It addition, I wanted something that could be moved with me if needed. This caused me to think of the design of the coop...

    New to BYC intro

Just starting in the world of back yard chickens. I am just north of Salt Lake in Utah. I have some chicks coming from Cackle Hatchery. I am getting some Buff Orpingtons and Barred Rocks. Really excited about this adventure and to be part of the forums.
