Bahaha! Much obliged, but I must defer to someone more creative. My handle was born out of sheer laziness. When joining BYC, I was instructed to enter a “unique user name”...so I did. 😜. Side note, I am so very thankful for all of you and the ridiculous amount of experience and knowledge that...
Crap! Thanks all. That was our suspicion too, but we’re still noobs. Oh well, if he doesn’t crow incessantly like the neighbor’s, we’ll happily keep him around. If he’s a loudmouth...we’ll find him a home. Lots of friends around here who have flocks that are out of earshot. :)
4.5 month old Dominique. Definitely larger than all my other girls (but they’re a mixed bag (no bantams) and it’s the only Dominique in the flock). Just started some infrequent crowing (A couple of times in the last 2 weeks). I’ve read that hens can crow as well, especially in a dominance...
First off...HILARIOUS thread! What a funny idea. Ok, so here’s our entry. The front row represents our alpha-snugglers. On the back perch, you’ll see the 2 beta-snugglers standing on the right. THEN...on the back, left, you’ll notice our queen of anti-socials.

Thnx to all for the feedback, friends! The chicks aren’t quite full-feathered yet, and we have some low 40°/high 30° temps coming later this week, so they aren’t ready to make the transition full-time. BUT today was warm and sunny (74°F) so we brought them into the run for a 1hr frolicking...
My 5 week old chicks are healthy, happy, and growing like weeds. Their brooder is in a barn and we’ve been reducing their heat steadily. I’d like to start introducing them to their run for an hour or so during the day, when the weather is nice (60-70°F). Is it ok to give them a little supervised...
So sorry for your loss! I have lots of raccoons on my property. While I’ve done all I can think of to predator-proof my coop/run prior to moving my chicks from the brooder...I’m also doing some pre-trapping to try and remove some of the threats. I am using the Duke Dog-Proof racoon traps and...
I’m using paper towels as well and they haven’t eaten it yet...but I’ve made sure that it’s laid completely flat w/ no exposed corners or spots sticking up. However, I move them into a temporary rubbermaid box when I’m cleaning their main brooder, and the paper towels I have in that box are...
Thnx @aart. I’ll post some more pics when I’m up and moving around more. Had rotator cuff surgery yesterday afternoon. NO fun. :) I’m in central MS, so temps will always be moderate down here, compared to my northern And western friends. (I updated my profile, thanks). I put 2 large hinged doors...
Thanks! We went w/ a mixed bag, 7 total. Blue & snowy easter-eggers, new hampshire red, white leghorn, & a Dominique. They’re all healthy & happy so far. It’s been fun watching how much they’re growing & their personalities are developing in just 2-3 weeks.
Finished my first coop and run this past weekend. Made the coop myself from scratch, but bought the run frame. The run only came w/ poultry fencing, so I wrapped the sides and made the apron w/ hardware cloth, and used welded metal fencing for the roof. (We have lots of raccoons, so I didn’t...
Quick update: so far so good! Chicks are growing quickly and happily. We have 3 of the 7 who are already extremely affectionate and run up to be petted. Added a 2nd perch & they’re loving it. Only had 1 pasty butt situation so far, but wasn’t too bad. The cozy coop has been great as a heat...
Thnx MrFluffy! We went w/ a mixed bag...of Easter-eggers, New Hampshire Reds, and White Leghorns. We had a hard time locating local chicks available in the timeframe that we wanted, so we went w/ an online option. By all accounts, these 3 breeds are solid in warm temps (we’re in the south), have...
Thnx for the tips! Temp is being monitored and is quite comfy. Took them about an hour to get warmed up and start attacking the food and water. They’re already very active and jumping, eating/drinking, climbing, & running around checking things out.
