We have 3 chickens and let mine free range 1-3 hours a day depending on how much damage they do. Our backyard is 50 x100 and it is grass with some gravel rock beds. They will tear it up but I've been reasonable with letting them forage, dust bathe and exercise. I herd them back in their coop...
She will lay. I gave up on my 42 week old. I thought i just bought a defective chick but then she surprised me with her first egg today. I gave her a lot of discarded greens from the grocery store and some free range time. I'm sure it was just time that did it but she seems pretty happy...
Two of my hens have been laying for several months now and was waiting for the last hen to lay. Tallulah-- our Salmon Favarolle finally gave us an egg after 42 long weeks. We threatened her with my recipe for chicken soup now and then but she just played aloof. The past few weeks I felt she...
Ok I think I'm getting ripped off. I just paid $17.50 for a 20lb bag in Seattle.(ouch) Organic, grown and bagged locally though. We get discarded greens from the grocery store and kitchen leftovers and it's been helping with the cost. I'm going to have to do my research though.
Yup, it's a pain. I've limited free ranging to 30 minutes while I clean out their coop. It's kinda sad but our backyard is fairly small and it can get messy especially in the winter with the dormant grass turning into mud. Not a fan of raking drainage rock or hosing off the patio.
I think...

Couldn't agree more. It's hard to watch our our kiddos not eat but I did had to do the above with my then 2 year old. Not easy to just shut up and release the power struggle but repeating the mantra "our job as parents is to provide healthy nourishing food and their job is to eat it"...
Are Salmon Favarolles really really slow to mature? I have a March hatched girl and have been getting eggs from the RIRs but not from the Salmon Favarolle. I have to say this is the only Favarolle I've known but so far she hasn't shown any redeeming qualities. Not to get too personal about...
So basically I have still have a lot to do. The coop was finished in May and my pullets have so far been happy in them. Now they are just starting to lay and they are patiently waiting for my brother the contractor to make the proper revisions. I'm so thankful that he did the work but...
Hi,
I was able to find some scrap vinyl in our garage but there isn't enough to cover fully. Any recommendations on seam sealer. Was also thinking of just painting the floor and using the vinyl as removable placemats as added protection without the commitment.
Thoughts?
uh sweet coop! That's committment. Love the window idea, I think if I showed this to my brother he would strangle me on the spot so I'll keep on the wish list of later projects.
Thanks for sharing:)
It's amazing how much there is to think about when building a chicken coop. I'm really trying to keep in mind that it's"just a chicken coop" but this project has been all consuming.
So I read vent information posted and I'm wondering about vent placement. There is one 16 x4 covered vent above...
