Oh, ok. There were a lot of white babies, but I only kept one. In this case, would a delaware rooster be possible, or would his colouring dominate? My family loved the look of the delaware mixed rooster we used to have, which is why I'm hoping the colour isn't dominant.
Or what about a speckled...
Thank you! I no longer have the silkies, if that's what you mean by silver, but I do have one splash easter egger, one (unknown mix) purpley grey hen, and one delaware x red star cross that looks like a delaware. The other hens are different shades of brown.
I am in the southern end of Ontario...
I love splash coloured chickens. My favourite silkie was a splash. Unfortunately, I haven't found any breeders with those colours nearby. With orpigntons, I've only seen one breeder who has blue ones, but she was just starting out. Most chicken breeders near me have only sex-links, bantams, or...
It's fine :)
I do love the look of blue orpigntons, so I'll definitely consider an orpignton rooster. Do you know how I can know which colours are dominant?
I know roosters don't lay eggs, which is why I said "of a breed that would lay 6-7 eggs a week". As in the rooster has the genetics for that, so that my hens would lay well since their mothers lay pretty much 7 days a week. I've had roosters before, but only silkies and other mixes.
Hi,
I am planning to eventually get a rooster, possibly next winter, and am trying to choose a breed. I want a rooster of a breed that would give 6-7 eggs a week, and a decently large bird (think delaware). I would also like the breed to be docile. The reason why I am not sure which breed to...
Sorry for the late reply, I've been very busy. The next day, the hen went back to mothering. I think it was the stress of the trip that made her "forget" (since she had her sister to take care of them). Now, they share duties. At night, they both keep the chicks warm, but during the day, the...
I have tried seperating them, but both hens panic. The hen that stopped keeping the chicks warm still makes the mother hen sounds (I've only ever heard broody/mother hens make those sounds), and if another chicken comes near them, she growls and if they still come, she jumps on them. So she's...
Hi everyone,
My silkie hen went broody and hatched out 5 chicks, along with her sister. They both shared the eggs (when one left to eat, the other would keep them warm). Now, they have hatched and they were both taking care of them for almost a week. I had to do a road trip with them, and now...
I'm writing this review on the behalf of a family member who has 6 barred rocks. She gets between 4-6 extra large eggs per day. I can't speak much about friendliness since she didn't hold them as chicks or anything, but they will run up to you when you have treats. The only negative is that they...
If you have a mean hen, it can be difficult to mix chickens. I had a hen that suddenly started pecking my little silkie constantly, and when we introduced chicks, she would pick them up by the throat and shake them. When you introduce new chickens, make sure you stay and watch for a long time...
Hi everyone,
I currently have 2 silkies that are part of my flock of standard size chickens, and was wondering if it would be possible to have a standard size rooster (say the size of a Delaware rooster)? Would he try to mount them even though they are tiny? My smallest silkie is the size of an...
Thank you for the replies. I put some lotion on her with a tiny bit of antibacterial essential oil, but couldn't really rub it in since she kept moving. I will check again tomorrow and see how it goes.
A family member's flock had lice, and we treated it all in 3 days by using a mixture of castor oil with a couple drops of thieves essential oil (optional but helpful. One drop/teaspoon of oil). We spread it where we saw eggs or lice, then put diatomaceous earth. The eggs were wrapped in the oil...
