I fly fish but I don't have time or the interest to tie. I have some associates who do and I just buy from them. A lot of fly shops have a decent selection too so I don't go short.
I have a Ayam Cemani cockerel that's barely six months old and has been mating the hens when the flock roo isn't looking. He's been doing it for at least two months now.
I had a RIR a couple of years ago who managed to do the same thing. Didn't seem to bother her at all and in a couple of months later it had grown back perfectly.
So my chickens have learned to mob the car when it pulls up, in case there's some takeout to be had. Apparently they mobbed UPS when he was backing up and one got backed over. RIP Dimebag.
I'd be careful with that. A 5 week old chick free ranging about is hawk popcorn, at least where I am. With that said, mine usually patrol the grass/lawn type areas that are mowed in the mornings and evenings. During the heat of the day they move into the wood line and forage in the brush.
I have some of their starlight green eggers, which are supposedly very similar. Mine lay giant eggs, bigger than my liege fighters. They also lay nearly every day. They're absolute egg machines.
I spent a number of years with ECSO. I still rather miss the place.
Edit: I feel like I should qualify that the time spent was as a deputy, not a jail inmate.
Some low growing bushy fruit trees like figs or mulberry can provide overhead cover and some free chicken food when in season. A good roo is also an excellent early warning system/muscle if you can have one.
Order 75 red jungle fowl from cackle. Raise them in the garage until feathered and release into the neighborhood. A couple of laying hens in someone's back yard will be the least of their problems. Disclaimer: Not responsible for legal issues and angry neighbors.
