I dont know if they are fire ants or not but we have seen several very large mounds of huge red ants both here and Wv. And the Shenandoah national park says they have themwhich is in my backyard. The mounds are about 2 feet around and a foot high. And those jokers are mean.

    Pine shavings

I use pine and cedar chips all the time. I have a sawmill and I work all my wood up from local trees. All my shavings I get from the planer go to the animals. No harm has ever come to any of them.

    Raccoons?

Def sounds like a coons MO. Though possums have been known to eat a neck and head off just to get at the insides. But dont generaly carry the chicken off to far. But either way. He will be back tonight. Once they find an easy snack they dont stop. I lost 7 chickens in 4 days this past winter...

    Chickens are carnivores!?

Chickens eat anything just about. All bugs and insects and worms are on the menu. Field mice are done for. I have watched ours chase, catch and then fight over a mouse for hours. But it is not on a scale that will affect your compost pile. Poop is poop. And chickens break theirs down quite well.
