    Soft-shelled egg

My nearly five month old hens just started laying a week ago, and this morning I got my first soft egg shell. As you describe, it looked like soft, flexible plastic and was nearly opaque. My research also said this can happen in the beginning and to make sure they are getting enough calcium...

    Mealworm Farming

It emerged from its pupa shell and is a beetle now. It just doesn’t move much. I was worried it was dying.

Hello, Yes. I have quick parts in the fire their bedding, and I alternate feeding them apples slices or carrots for their moisture needs. Thank you!

    Mealworm Farming

I started my mealworm farm just over a week ago, and the first pupa has emerged from its cocoon this morning (or over night). It isn’t moving around much, but it is getting darker. Should I be concerned, or is it normal that it is not that active? When should it be more active?

Treats for 2 week old chicks

I like your reasoning. It seems sound. I am raising my first clutch of baby hens, and it’s logical based upon observing baby chicks with their mothers. Thank you for this advice.

    Protruding/inflamed vent on baby chick

Thank you everyone for your advice and support. Unfortunately the little rooster, I think it was a rooster, passed away today. 😢 I have chosen a nice spot in the garden to lay him to rest. Thank you all for your help.

Advice for chick's swollen vent? UPDATE message #13

Thank you so much!!! I will boil some eggs right now and go buy some cortisone cream. I feel so bad for it. It chirps occasionally like it’s in pain and it’s bum is throbbing. I will follow your treatment, and hopefully we will Have the same success. I’m glad your baby chick made a full recovery.

I too am a first time chicken parent and am coming to this site with the same issue only my chickies bum looks more inflamed than yours. It had pasty bottom yesterday, which I cleaned. It looked a little swollen and red, but it was open. A couple of hours later, it was chirping like in pain and...

Advice for chick's swollen vent? UPDATE message #13

Same here. I am new to having chickens, and one of my six day old babies is struggling. It had pasty butt earlier today which I cleaned according to the instructions. I noticed it was protruding, but only a little at the time. I check it a couple of hours later, and it is protruding more, and I...
