Why bury hardware clothe? Use chain-link fence on top of grass?

Trefoil, yes I've heard that they can do that, nasty trick. However the chain-link is flat on the ground and my tractor and coop have HC around the sides and top. Outside of a few areas where the ground is not perfectly flat, I don't see anything stick an arm between chain-link on the ground and...

    DIY Chicken Door Opener. Ideas?

Ah, ok I get it now. How do you trigger the relay to either open or close though? I figured you were going to use a clip on the timer dial to swing by and trigger it.

Why bury hardware clothe? Use chain-link fence on top of grass?

OK. Don't think weasels are much of an issue around here South of Napa. My Sheltie chased off a couple of adolescent fox recently, and I live caught a possum last year. Hawks or falcons usually flying in the hills here to.

    O/T- Plagiarism

Bunnylady, I probably am in agreement with you in the main. Obviously there is always previous art/work from which one draws upon. Having to cite would be a pain and boring for all. In this case though I feel it is a little different. From the content of her blog to some of the answers she...

How many Amps are needed to operate a "12 volt car antenna" automatic coop door?

Agreed, the coop wouldn't be the problem. If the coop were near the house and it caught fire while you were away.... Probably not a problem though. I'd probably drop them in a metal bin of some sort so that if they were to start smoking they'd just die there.

    O/T- Plagiarism

Not sure why this annoyed me, however here it is. Came across the Fermented Feed threads, and someone posted a link to an excellent, indepth article which explained it in detail. http://naturalchickenkeeping.blogspot.com/p/fermented-feed.html After reading it, did some more googling, and...

How many Amps are needed to operate a "12 volt car antenna" automatic coop door?

Cool, mine is also going to open horizontally. Not sure about running 2 grounds from different PUS's though. If there were to be a fire, your insurance company might not cover damage.... Maybe someone with more electrical experience can chime in.

Why bury hardware clothe? Use chain-link fence on top of grass?

I know the common wisdom is to bury HC around the perimeter of your coop, however that won't work so well with my tractor. I am planning on putting down a piece of chainlink fence on top of the grass, with it extending a foot or so past the 2x4 framing of the tractor. I would think it...

How many Amps are needed to operate a "12 volt car antenna" automatic coop door?

Argh, good idea again. I am doing similar with a 12v UPS battery (12v/7Ah) that will be recharged with a small solar panel. For the OP, moetrout's suggestion is perfect. 120v power to trickle charger to battery to antenna motor + & - . The one question I would have is, if you connect the...

    DIY Chicken Door Opener. Ideas?

Hmm, good point I would guess both relays are hardwired to the motor, and you would still use both clips as relay triggers?

    DIY Chicken Door Opener. Ideas?

OK, so I had some free time last night while waiting for others to complete their tasks, and got a little too creative. Next suggestion, if the OP even bothers to read, would be to get a powered radio antenna for a car. Don't know how much force they can exert, however you could always attach...

    Hardware cloth vs chicken wire

Well, I'm still new here, however a couple of observations. 1. Just because you are using chicken wire without incident so far doesn't mean much. Since so many people have used it, and had terrible results, all one can reasonably conclude from your experience so far is that its...

    Flies everywhere!!!!

Well, HD has the $4 Rescue fly traps that are a plastic bag with an attractant. There are a couple of different kinds, of which one apparently smells foul but pulls in tons and tons of flies. When full, you just toss 'em in the trash. While not a permanent fix, I would think that if you go...

How many Amps are needed to operate a "12 volt car antenna" automatic coop door?

That really depends upon the antenna. If new, it should include documentation on current draw. If it doesn't, just attach it to your car battery, and a multimeter and check it. Your multimeter should have a second Common/Ground input that you plug the black wire into, and it should be labeled...
