OneChickTwo, thank you agin for your time and the sharing of your knowledge! Since my original post the one chick I used in my photos has grown and no longer has to "flop his feet" in order to not trip on his foot feathers (only on the 3rd toes)! They were bigger than his feet! Lol! They are...
This is one of my 22 day old incubator hatched black copper Marans chicks. It is the only 1 of 10 with feathers as large as its feet (outside toe) and a feather on the outside of its "knee". Does anyone have photos of breed standard "foot feathers" for 3 week old Black Copper Marans chicks...
cypressdrake,
I have had the peeling "out shrink wrapped chicks" issue. (LOVE your description!) While only on my 3rd incubator hatch (which I realize doesn't even qualify me as a neophyte amateur/beginner yet!) I have increased my success rate dramatically, but in my last 2 hatches I have had...
Once again, Thank you! Since I don't have the parents of these chicks I don't need to separate the mother but am more concerned with learning which chicks to put into the layer only flock! the chick with the yellow in its beak already has fairly yellow feet. Are the two usually connected?
I have started using a similar dry incubation method with my Marans, except I don't aim the final humidity quite as high. I agree with you that it seems to be more effective for me anyway. My hatch rate has gone from 10% to 85%!
I will look up the "history of Marans in the Us as suggested. I do have Cuckoo Marans hens (11) that are about a year old now. I got them as day olds from Cackle Hatchery last year. Wanted to make sure I had the brooder issues down before I tried hatching, but the Black Coppers are the...
The second hatch (this post is about my 3rd and final for this year) consisted of eggs that were actually being selected for the white "mutant" gene (according to the individual that sent them to me) and had parents that had just been imported from France. So, the individual was completely...
One Chick Two, once again, THANK YOU for your time! This 3rd hatch is from another individual and they say they have been raising and showing Marans for 30 something years and their line is Bev David and Jeane (which is what most of the lines seem to be?). The last hatch with the white and...
Thank you yet again! I will look him up. This endeavor is much like graduate school...sometimes you have to know the answer before you know what questions you should have asked! Lol!
One Chick Two, Thank you again for your time! I have learned a great deal from you and the 8 chicks I hatched out. I must say they are a good "starter set" in that so far they have provided a visual aide for all of your topics! LOL! One is white, 1 has toe issues, 1 is all black, 1 has...
I agree, but learning about the new breeds (for me anyway) is half the fun! I also enjoy the interaction with people who are interested and passionate about the topic. I also enjoy the sharing of ideas and experiences! (Oh, and i love the birds! LOL!)
