Hens DEFINETLY, if roosters, they would have sickle shaped saddle and tail feathers.(and a noticeably longer tail and larger combs and wattles) A rooster would probably be crowing a good bit by that age.
They look alot like Brahmas. to me. They're most likely the same breed, just different plumage types. I assume Brahma because of the darker feathers on the hackle and tail of the light one, and also the feathering on the legs. If they are bantam Brahmas, they will still be close to the size of a...
The feather coloring looks a lot like our Brown Leghorns, Leghorns also have a bit bigger tail than usual for a hen. The yellow shanks are also a characteristic in Leghorns. If they are Leghorns, they will start to develop a larger comb that will lay to one side(in hens).
I agree that they are Delawares because of the mainly white feathers on the body, and black feathers at the hackle and tail, and also the yellow shanks; hard to tell for sure about gender because of the mainly lighter plumage.
This is our Ameraucana rooster Charlie, he is about 2 1/2yrs old now. He, and one of our Ameraucana hens, Georgia; are two of the original Chickens from our first flock which we raised from a few weeks old.
We have a much bigger run than you guys, but what we did was board up the top half around the run and put a heat lamp that we used when they were chicks in the brooder and clamped it in the top corner of the run and let the heat circulate in the run and into the coop(which also only has a square...
Rooster definitley, because of the greenish long tail feathers and the sicle-shaped saddle and hackle(neck) feathers. Looks just like our ameraucana rooster did at that age he's about 2yrs old now, see him at the "Ameraucana" album on Galleries by Varner flock.
Has anyone tried this method( the box seperation thing) and did it work? Im in the process of this because my "sweet, calm & friendly" buff orp. hen is doing seriuos damage to one of our new girls. the other new hen is doing great with the others.
Hey! We're the new neighbors of BYC! We have 6 hens and 2 roosters that our kids just couldn't part with! The hens are: 1 buff orp., 3 americaunas, and 2 brown leghorns. Jack is our "big baby" buff orp. & Charlie is a "calm but strong" ameraucana. We've had them for about 2 years? Still learning...
