I have (2) 14 month old chickens and (2) 4 month old chickens I raised from chicks. My grown Black Minorca will not stop bullying my pullets. They are still so fearful of going down from the coop to the run that I have to force them down. They love being in the run but my bully chases them back...
Caught ANOTHER snake trying to get in the coop tonight. This is a smaller one but same kind, Yellow rat snake. It couldn’t get in thankfully since we fortified the coop but damn...wish they didn’t kill 2 chickens. I would happily let them coexist but can’t risk it. I
relocated to a nice wooded...
Hi again! By no means do I mean this thread to persuade people to kill rat snakes. I love snakes! I have never killed one (well I ran over one crossing the road once but it was as long as the road and I had no choice...still feel bad).
Just letting people know my experience and how I handled...
I wanted to share this story about a huge yellow rat snake that killed 2 of my pullets last week so others are informed and aware that this could happen...as I had zero clue a rat snake would strangle my babies!
About 4 weeks ago I found a large 5+Ft yellow rat snake in my coop. There were 2...
I’m going through almost the same thing. Adding two brahma pullets (12 weeks today) with my other 2 girls...1 brahma and 1 black minorca. (13 months old).
They seems fine at night when they roost but the pullets will NOT go down to the run during the day. I put them down there and the black...
UPDATE! Scratch (that's what I named her) is doing great. The Terramycin the vet gave us is working wonders. The vet said she will most likey have to have the lower lid removed as it pertrudes out from her eye a bit. She cannot close her eye all the way but the nictitaing eyelid helps keep it...
Update! Well this morning it looks like infection. Yellow puss in corner of eye. I called a vet to come see her. He presicrined Terramycin and said she might have to have surgery in a couple weeks to remove the bottom eyelid that is hanging if it doesnt fall off on its own. She is acting fine...
Today. It looks awful but it is healing some.
Put some neosporin in it lightly. She is now actually blinking her eye some. Wish I could post a video. It looks mangled so I think her sisters picked on her booboo to get it to this point. She is eating a ton and hopefully healing every day!
She is doing well. This morning the hanging part is smaller (dying off it appears) and her eye seems to be healing. She lets me hold her and look carefully at the eye. I am not an avian expert but it does look like an injury and I did separate her as the other chicks were picking on the hanging...
My 3 week old chick had a swollen eye yesterday and has no other symptoms. Today it looked WAY worse and I separated her from her sisters. She is alert, eating, drinking, sweet as pie. I looked all day for terramycin and even drove over an hour to a place who said they had it and they did not. I...
I had to order the terramycin ointment as noone has it in stock. My husband drove over an hour to TS who said they had it and when he got there, they in fact did not. I bought allergy eye drops and washed her eye out. It did not appear to hurt here. Is this an infected
Tear duct?
Sorry pic...
This morning she looked worse!! She looks and acts fine physically other than the eye but the other chicks are picking on her droopy eye piece (gross)! Any thoughts on this now?
I have separated her from the others and put her in a dog crate with bedding, food and water. Poor baby!
Thank you. I will go to the feed store tomorrow morning. Hoping it clears up and she will be fine. I also worry whatever it is does not affect the other chicks.
