I have a rooster that has very enlarged feet and legs it looks as if they are inflated. I thought it could be scaly mites but any photos I see of scaly mites the scales are crusty looking. This rooster has smooth scales they look like cartoon feet big and cumbersome. Would a severe bumble...
We have a resident fox also every spring I assume when she has kits she will come under the smallest space under the fence and take a whole chicken no wasted food for her. The dog has really solved that problem too without shooting, trapping or killing the fox.
I have a racoon family that used to come eat catfood. One night I looked out my porch door and she had 7 very small babies with her. Then the chicken slaughter started. A full belly of catfood wasn't good enough. She killed chickens for the fun of it leaving headless bodies strewn about...
I will take a picture tomorrow. It is both legs and it is hard. It is not a soft tissue swelling the last pullets' legs grew very thick like elephant man disease. She was killed by the other chickens when they mistakenly got in her pen with her and she couldn't defend herself and couldn't figure...
This is the 2nd pullet in a year that has thickening leg bones. It is not the skin as in scaly leg the bones are growing thick and the pullet is small and seems to be stunted. She can get around but the legs seem weak on top of growing very thick. I cannot find anything that matches her...
Just bought 8 pullet chicks from the feed store they said they are brown Leghorns and they will lay brown eggs. I cannot find anything online about any Leghorns that lay brown eggs? Maybe the lady at the feed store doesn't know what she is talking about?Does anyone know of brown Leghorns laying...
Cold for us is 35 degrees! I can't imagine living in the snow I have been in CA all my life. I was surprised too about the Merek's is there a specific test that would definitively show Merek's? I am very thankful there is a service that will do all of this testing for $20 I think that is amazing...
Final came in yesterday looks like it is what they originally suspected Merek's and wet pox. No other chicken has been showing symptoms yet but our weather here went from really warm to really cold so now that it is wet and cold I am hoping it doesn't stress them.I will call UCD and ask a vet to...
I am not feeding fermented feed I was feeding mash dry I just started wetting it about 2 days before the hen died. I soak in hot water about 2 hours before feeding and they clean out the feed pans daily so I don't think it was moldy feed.Maybe the pox plaque in her trachea caused her to...
Thank you everyone for your replies. No, they were not vaccinated most all came from Tractor Supply and the 25 I ordered from a hatchery 3 years ago were not vaccinated, hard lesson learned on saving a few dollars to not vaccinate.I did buy 4 Jersey Giant chicks from a private party off of...
Well if I understand correctly both pox and Merek's are not treatable only secondary infections can be treated. I feel like it is a death watch just waiting for the next chicken to show symptoms. I will never get chickens again as long as I live on this property.I have access to some of the top...
Original post
8 month old hen suddenly struggling to breathe she does not show any other symptoms such as sneezing or coughing and I do not see any discharge. I had a rooster die a few months ago with what I believed was wet pox and a pullet died about the same time as the rooster that started...
I though her pupil looked dilated also and yes all 3 birds lost were a year or younger. I listed Marek's as one of the possible causes of death on the lab intake form.I will post the results when they come in.
She died a few hours after I took that video clip.It was very strange that she died that quickly. I dropped her of at the lab today I hope they can determine what happened.
